Hey all. So I graduated in May, and like a lot of recent grads I am having a tough time finding work. It doesn't help that I got a B.A. from CHASS, but that is neither here nor there. I had a good internship at the N.C. General Assembly and was doing the whole networking thing, but since the House and Senate have wrapped up session, there is no one here to network with. I've tried monster and careerbuilder but it hasn't amounted to anything. Has anyone here used a staffing agency before? If not, are there any other outlets I can use to find work? Thanks for the help.

have you tried the career center? even if you're graduated they will likely still help you.

they'll help make sure your resume is structured correctly and even do mock interviews to give you some experience with that before your actual interview

i know people knock the career center but thats how i found my job with caterpillar and im still there 4 years later.

I did cutco until i found something. It allows you to develop many usefull skills, looks really good on your resume (regardless of field) and can payoff really well if you commit to it.

ahhahahahaha

If I saw 'cutco' on a resume for any longer than somebody should spend humoring whichever idiot friend or family member tricked you in to it, I'd throw it away.

Might as well join Quixtar -- then you own your own business!

working for a quarter billion$/yr grossing marketing firm sure looks a hell of a lot better than nothing between jobs. Hell, their training is so legit that many business colleges (including ncsu) use it as a senior project. But hey, suit yourself.

She speaks the truth. Although I didn't find my job through the career center, I was very active with them sophomore-senior years and they helped me a lot with my resume and stuff. They were a big help in me getting a co-op too.

you need to have an answer to the question "what do i want to do?"

before anyone can give you any advice.

perhaps there are places that Cutco would look good on a resume, but I can't think of too many.

Anywho, the career center is definitely good. I had 2 solid leads through there and took one and really love my job (heres to hoping my project gets extended! heh). I'm not sure how long you can use it after you graduate though.

It's great if you're looking for a lucrative career with any of the following:

Amway/Quixtar
Avon
Tupperware
Mary Kay
Prepaid Legal
Pampered Chef
....

and so on.

So basically mambagrl is some alias and now generically trolling all sections? Only a true troll would throw out cutco like it's a real skill.

Her first thread on here that I saw was certainly one of the most fantastic examples of trolling I've witnessed on here in some time.

She didn't cave in on it, and she still hasn't caved in. Just look for the "my car got stolen" thread.

The work in the soap box is also quite admirable.

lol@ cutco

I will admit though that i worked with a kid at my first sales job that had worked at Cutco previously. He's making 6 figures selling medical devices now

not that having Cutco on his resume had anything to do with him landing that job, just saying

i sold cutco for my personal selling call at ncsu. it was either that or some horribly long report. you had a choice but the only reason there was a choice is because the students who couldn't legally work in the US couldn't do the cutco thing...

anyway, its really easy. if you have half a personality and can talk to people you dont know, you can sell shit. there is no skill involved. they train you on exactly what to say and literally give you a script to read from while you're giving your demos.

the knives, are fucking awesome, but it takes no skill to sell them.

agreed ^^

I would recommend, like already said, going to the career center and using all the resources there that you can. Also start going to networking events in Raleigh and volunteering. You'll meet people that may know someone here or there.

Also, if you know what you want to do and where you want to work, try showing up (looking professional) and inquiring about jobs. Submitting a resume online gets you dumped into a pile of 100's of other people who are being lazy with their job searching. Don't get stuck in that pile.

The people who bash cutco are probably all the people who were lazy and started bashing it once they found out about "3 days unpaid training" or the people that just created appointments to get base pay. The people who actually bought into it know the deal.

Its not just sales jobs that require marketing/sales skills. If you don't realize that then you're hopeless. Going into a customers home and explaining a product to them (regurgitating or not) gives you a certain experience that last forever. The confidence built gives you a "swagger" when communicating with other. Most jobs require you "sell" your work or explain to the customer, investor, or rest of the comany why your work is important. Cutco gets your feet wet in the business world better than anything else suggested in this thread.

Major companies know all about cutco and the sucessfull people it has built such asronald regan just to begin. Two resumes and they will choose the one with cutco all else equal- everytime. Schools don't use it for no reason.
