If I live in Greensboro and want to buy a car from a private seller in Raleigh, can I get him to just send me the title and then take it to my local license plate office? Or do we have to meet at a DMV at the same time? That would suck because I work all day and getting the time off would be difficult. 8/27/2009 4:38:08 PM |

You don't have to meet at the DMV per se, but you'll have to have the title signed in front of a public notary. You might be able to go to a Wachovia or something where a public notary is available until 6:00pm instead of 5:00pm (when the DMV closes). SECU has free public notary.
The DMV can notarize the title for a small fee for you.

go to the bank, they'll notarize your title swap, jump in your new car, go to the DMV, you pay taxes/tags/title fee and your on your way.
then a few months later your get a tax bill from the county...which will be fail. 8/27/2009 4:48:15 PM |

FedEx/Kinkos on Hillsborough(or most anywhere for that matter) usually has a notary on staff and are open late. Expect to pay $5/signature(so $10). Generally just the top section(Part A) on the back has to be notarized this way. The DMV will notarize Part C at the bottom for you(once you provide proof of insurance), and also charge you $5.

^^completely loled at the tax bill = fail. I just bought a bike last week and payed $197 in titling/fees/sales tax and asked the lady who hated her job if that covers my property tax for this year and she replied with a simple "nope". I = fail. 9/8/2009 12:28:51 AM |

yes, the only thing notarized on the title is the SELLERS signature. anyone who tells you otherwise is a moron. get the dude to have it notarized and mailed to you, simple. 9/8/2009 12:31:26 AM |
