Don't do it dude.

Heard too many horror stories.

Then again, it might get you in with the boss if he really views you as a potential good friend.

add him/her and then drop him/her. he/she will see you added them, but not see you dropped them. problem solved.

Just add them. Who cares. I'm friends with the partners at my firm, and 90% of my pics are of me drunk as shit. I'm still employed.

dont put shit on facebook that you dont want the whole world to know.

settings be damned, ain't nothing ever private on the interwebs.

that said, i wouldn't want my boss to know i was posting on FB during work hours.

no, no, no, no... this can only end badly. two possible lies... 1. say that you really don't do fb that much anymore, or 2. pretend you didn't get the invite. if he asks, act stupid, shrug, and say, "what? i never got your invite..."

tho jackleg's option of setting up a separate page is def doable

DON'T DO IT. fight this trend for as long as possible. something tells me it's only a matter of time before companies expect you to be networked with them on facebook, so then we're all going to have having two profiles or something. it wears me out just to think about those days ahead

Yep facebook is my social network, that means as a rule no family and no coworkers unless I am friends with them in a separate social setting

"friends with boss"

unless you like grew up with this guy as kids and were already BFFs, this will never last. the power differential will always eventually force one or both of the relationships to end.

and the losing party will not be the boss.

this will always occur, whether you know the reason or not.

eventually, you will learn to never mix business with social beyond the "acquaintances" level. it will always turn out unfavorably.

even having a peer/colleague as a social drinking buddy is dangerous territory.

(NOTE: i'm talking about *real* professional jobs, not pretend jobs like restaurants, retail, and summer gigs.)

1) Don't accept.
2) If he calls you out, say you don't use facebook anymore.
3) Profit.

dangerous to say you "don't facebook" any more.

problem is, he may be friends of your friends, and can see any comments you might make on other people's walls, or may over hear a conversation, or may see your screen in passing... any number of ways to catch your lie.

you can run, but you can't hide. saying you forgot will only work so long.

the only solution is that i just don't put up anything i wouldn't want the world to see.

Fuck that. Scorched Earth Policy, son. Obliterate any evidence that you use the site any more. Start again later. It's worked for several acquaintances.

You are such a douchebag. I have a professional job. And I am friends with people at that job and have beers with them sometimes. And, OMG, I'm on facebook having beers with them. You must work at the worst place on earth.

COMPLETELY agree. if you work somewhere with any form of ranking and rating system, it is dangerous. you are always in competition with each other. and at some point, one of you will probably move higher than the other, be the other's boss, have some form of control, etc.

we have casual dinners with co-workers from time to time and one guy i work with is my regular golf partner for company outings. but that's it.

perhaps. i've been called as much a number of times.

but i present that you are blissfully ignorant of the way most professional jobs in this country work.

fact is, people compete, especially in professional careers, and the competition increases as the higher up the food ladder you rise.... people will use whatever they can to get ahead of the next guy. if you're out getting smashed with coworkers, the rumor gets around that youre a lush. if you're out scamming on chicks, rumor gets around that you're untrustworthy. make no mistake, managers hear these rumors, and consciously or unconsciously make promotion or retention decisions based on who appears to more stable.

now maybe you work at some happy gumdrop factory where everyone is fraternal and goes out for drinks and has a back-slapping good time, with never a regretful incident. but i doubt it. and even if you do, professional jobs don't work that way.

yeah, you keep saying that. in fact, i have a great job, the best i've ever had. I'm an engineer at a Fortune 500 company thats listed on the CNN/Money Top 100 Places to work. I'm paid a high salary, with bonuses, stock options, quality insurance, grad school tuition paid for, We have a relaxed, collegial work environment, with on site cafeteria, full gym, locker room and showers. It's not surprising we have a ridiculous number of long-term employees and very little turnover.

what we don't do, though, is go out to the titty bars or pool halls together after work. I have worked those jobs, before. you can have them. somebody's drama always winds up fucking everything up..
