Have you entertained the possibility that you might just be part of the 9%?

It's a kid's movie, and I don't really know how to judge a movie like that. A lot of the animation was very well done, but there isn't much to say about the plot.

see: everything pixar has done for an example of how to have a kids' movie with a good plot AND good animation

This is also a kids' movie

But I will say I haven't seen Ponyo so I can't really judge anything about it.

^^^ yeah, the animation was beautifully rendered, there were some impressive scenes...but the story and the dialogue was just ridiculous.

maybe, by some sort of cinematic criteria it was a winner, but i would not recommend it. the only thing for certain: Japan is fucking weird.

^^ agreed. Pixar consistently knocks them out of the park.

^ okay, fine, you got me there. i'd rather stab my eyes out before watching a movie about kids with super powers starring Tim Allen and Rip Torn.

I've been trying to get mygirlfriend to see a Miyazaki movie forever now. She always refuses, thinking it is some crazy absurd ninjas and tentacles anime nonsense that she has no desire to see. She saw this poster at the movies the other day, saw the actors' names at the top, and suggested that it might be worth watching. Self-pwnt.

Regardless of joe-schmoe's opinion, I'll still see it if it has Miyazaki's name on it.

well, if she likes absurd stories about five-year-old children discovering their true soul mates, pledging undying eternal love, restoring the balance of nature, and saving the planet ... well, then by all means, go spend 40 bucks on tickets and overpriced snacks.

and you can come back here to bitch about you spent the last half of the movie in a perpetual state of Carlface.

it wasn't a total loss, the animation was nice. i'm just glad i only paid matinee prices.

EDIT: it's especially disappointing, because, is i really liked Miyazaki's other works (Totoro, Mononoke, Spirited Away), because the stories were so compelling. this one was just bizarre.

I've never been a huge Miyazaki fan, but I've always appreciated his films for what they were. My wife's made me watch them all, and there are even some that were genuinely enjoyable (Porko Rosso, Howl's Moving Castle, Grave of Fireflies)

Ponyo effing sucked, though. Seriously. 91% my ass.

***SPOILER***

WTF in regard to proving "true love." The big test was the boy saying "yes?" Man, that's true love, right there...

***SPOILER***

I wasn't expecting it to be Spirited Away. And I didn't plan on seeing it in theatres.

eh, well, if you're trying to introduce the genre to your gal, and she is already skeptical, then at least start with one his better works.

Mononoke or Spirited are obviously great choices with wide appeal.

It was heart-wrenchingly sad.

I still made a dead baby joke at the end.
