I noticed that in last few years my interest in modding has completely faded away. Now at 30, I feel perfectly content with a stock car. Days of stiff suspensions don't appeal to me anymore. I am starting to consider 5-series and even looking at E38 7-series, older amg 55s and more plush cars.
I think more so than before I view modding as waste of money. I don't think I could pay a $800 for exhaust anymore or $300 for front lip. I'm thinking where I can travel instead. Hell, I don't even listen to stereo loud anymore. Work and finding time to relax has taken over.
anybody in the same boat? i think the fact that i live in city now is a turn off. NC had such nice roads in comparison to fucking north east. 9/1/2009 8:48:36 PM |

There are several components to this, as I've been having some of the same thoughts at times.
1) the social aspect, the "car scene" changing in addition to yourself maturing
2) your changing tastes in how you want a car to look, sound, and drive
3) perhaps a feeling that you've been missing out on life by channeling most of your extra money and time into one hobby
if you don't have regular contact with a group of friends or a club who are into it, it starts to lose its appeal. A lot of my "car friends" during the much more active car scene of a few years ago have long since gotten out of the game. But I hear what you're saying about wanting to travel. Cars are an expensive hobby and once you get deep enough into it and finish a couple projects you start wondering if you should be spreading your discretionary income around a little more.
As for getting tired of stiff suspensions and louder exhausts, well I think most people get tired of that for driving on a daily basis. After three years of that in a daily driver, I know I did. 9/1/2009 8:57:21 PM |

i thought i was in the same boat as you. in fact, i had the exact same feelings. when i ordered my truck i ordered it so it would be the exact way i wanted it because i had already told myself that it's staying stock. haha, yeah, that lasted a month. modding a car is a total waste of money. but isn't most hobbys? rarely do i listen to my stereo loud even though it is actually the loudest stereo i've ever owned. but i built is as such to play music the cleanest you've ever heard. my priorities have definitely changed when it comes to modding but i guess that's part of getting older. 9/1/2009 8:57:28 PM |

are you kidding me?? boston roads were formed from old cow paths. I rip up storrow drive in my protege 5 at 60+, those curves are awesome! you'll hate winter with the BMW and I hope you have off street parking. 93 underneath downtown is great too, and you can hear your exhaust resonate.
try this route, South Border road through the Fells is awesome http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=Storrow+Dr&daddr=Fellsway+to:Mount+Vernon+St+to:42.448478,-71.091843+to:South+St&hl=en&geocode=FTk7hgId_P7C-w%3BFRwZhwIdtFrD-w%3BFQjIhwIdIJrC-w%3B%3BFZb4hwIdQh3D-w&mra=dpe&mrcr=1&mrsp=3&sz=14&via=1,3&sll=42.452215,-71.099482&sspn=0.044647,0.075703&ie=UTF8&z=14

not surprising at all. downtown boston is quite possibly one of the biggest clusterfucks i've ever experienced. to top it off, there's construction and detours every other block. i mean really, what the hell are they hoping to accomplish? totally eliminate any rational traffic flow into, out of, or around the city?

I love my S2000, I think it's just about perfect and isn't really in any need of mods. Though I do miss having a louder exhaust so I might do something about that. As far as serious power upgrades, I've come to realize those are (for the most part) a huge waste of money. I'll make a power upgrade with my next car. I'd rather spend money for modding on track days instead, or things related to tracking (i.e. the track pads I picked up this week). 9/2/2009 8:29:19 AM |

I think if I were still a single guy, I'd be more inclined to blowing money on toys. But as a married guy, any money I blow would have to be equaled by my wife since our interests are polar opposite and my tastes and hers aren't cheap.
I'll be 50 (when the eventual kids are off to college) and the savings is substantial before I get to indulge again.

I don't have this problem, fortunately . I just have to let my wife know what I'm about to buy (to make sure we don't accidentally use the same money twice and have a wtf moment later ) and usually it's okay. If I want to do something, I can. Same with her. We've got it like that

I'm 27 and I like keeping my car stock. But then again its already a great setup from the factory
except the audio...that shit sucks but I did swap out the stock head unit for a double-din navigation unit. I suppose thats a mod although i've had the head unit in my previous car as well. 9/3/2009 9:39:08 AM |

well.... i do have a modified car but its not got any money in it. I am not sure it counts. I couldnt bring myself to modify a car worth >10G. 9/3/2009 9:46:31 AM |

I think one modified car is good enough. The mx3 is a beater car. As easy and "affordable" it would be to put in a more powerful/built motor, I'm just going to take the minimalist's approach on it and leave it all stock and see how far I can scrape by in that car with $onslow county$
Sound system modifications will probably be made in any car I have, however, everything else will remain the OEM unless aftermarket is justifiable. I've already got one car that's been modded to all hell. 9/3/2009 9:54:14 AM |

I'd say thats different. more of a project car you build vs. buying an already decent car from a dealership and the first thing you do is throw in a CAI because a friend told you it would add +20 hp haha 9/3/2009 10:42:34 AM |

man, i baby the shit out of mine. every once in a while will i let someone know what's up as long as i can get traction. above 30 i'm fine (or 55 if it's wet out). my neighbor has a 07.5 LMM running a PPE 225 tune and if his truck is in "D" one pedal is on the floor at all times. i can't believe his shit hasn't detonated yet but no problems so far with 40K on the odometer. he doesn't even have a transgo jr. either and has never thought about even a slight warmup before flooring it.11/16/2009 10:09:27 AM |

i'm guessing he has a turbo back exhaust, that dpf would be plugged up as a motherfucker if not
not sure about the PPE tune, but most defuel at a certain input/output slip rate on the tranny, its almost idiotproof11/17/2009 1:21:26 PM |
