Rocky Mount, N.C. — A state Highway Patrol trooper has been charged with assaulting a Rocky Mount police officer during a confrontation a week ago, authorities said Wednesday.

Trooper Byron Lee Varnell, 34, was charged with assault by strangulation and assault on a government official.

Varnell was placed on paid leave Tuesday. He had been on administrative duty since the Sept. 2 incident.

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident..

Both the Highway Patrol and Rocky Mount police have declined to identify what led to the confrontation.

Varnell has been a member of the patrol since 2001 and, in 2006, won the department’s Samaritan Award when he pulled a lady from the path of an approaching vehicle, possibly saving her life."

Me thinks a woman was involved with this. Those troopers don't get bent out of shape very easily...

The State Bureau of Investigation is looking into an alleged altercation between a state trooper and a Rocky Mount police officer.

Trooper B.L. Varnell, 34, is accused of attacking officer James R. Reynolds late Tuesday while both men were on duty, authorities said.

Officials would not reveal details of the altercation, but the dispute seems to stem from an incident earlier in the evening involving Reynolds and Varnell’s father, Boyce Ray Varnell.

Reynolds used a Taser on Boyce Varnell, 56, around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday during an arrest and charged him with communicating threats and resisting a public official.

Police said Boyce Varnell – a candidate this fall for the Dortches Board of Commissioners – had been feuding with Ronald Winstead at 600 Fenner Road over a lawnmower owned by Varnell.

Police were called when Boyce Varnell began threatening Winstead, authorities said.

“Varnell did not comply with multiple officer commands and pulled away from officers several times as they attempted the arrest,” Capt. Laura Fahnestock said. “A Taser was deployed, and Varnell was placed under arrest.”

A Rocky Mount police officer said Thursday morning it was rumored that B.L. Varnell arranged a meeting with Reynolds later in the night and assaulted him.

Authorities would not comment on the claim.

B.L. Varnell, placed on administrative leave Wednesday, has been a member of the patrol since 2001, a spokesman with the N.C. Highway Patrol said.

In 2006, Varnell won the patrol’s Samaritan Award when he pulled a Nash County woman from the path of an approaching vehicle, possibly saving her life.

Reynolds remains in his duty assignment as a senior police officer within the Uniform Operations Division, Fahnestock said. "
