i've got a sony surround sound system that's probably 6 or 7 years old, and has worked perfectly since i got it. i've got it hooked up through AV cables to my HD cable box, and that runs through HDMI to the tv. i've not had any issues in 3 years with this particular set up, but all of a sudden the sound refuses to come on. to my knowledge nothing has changed, the speakers all still respond through testing, and the radio tuner still works. any thoughts? i use a harmony 880 remote, but like i said, the settings are all still the same 9/11/2009 11:58:10 AM |

no the radio works fine, it's just the tv setting that's not.
i just turned the volume up to max and could just barely make out sound coming from the middle speaker. since the test ran fine, it wouldn't be the wiring or the speakers would it?

possible that either the input went bad or the pre-amp on the box went bad. Swap the input to a different one (i.e. Change it from TV to CD) and see if it works. If not, change it back and then run your cables from the tv output instead of the cable box. 9/11/2009 10:58:24 PM |

if its TWC, make sure your cable box is set to HDMI out WITH sound. If your cable box got reset somehow, it may lose that setting and revert back to the basic setting of HDMI without sound. 9/12/2009 1:04:06 PM |

how do i do that? under general settings, all i see is audio: digital out, with other, hdmi, and dolby digital as my options. i don't see a choice for analog 9/18/2009 3:22:07 PM |

i went and changed the connections to all hdmi (cable out to receiver in, then receiver out to tv in) and still nothing. this is really starting to piss me off
the manual said something about using analog with optical, but that doesn't seem right. 9/18/2009 5:33:40 PM |

can your TV do optical (tos-link) out? if so, you can try
cable box ---(hdmi)---> TV ---(optical)---> surround sound receiver
make sure you use a digital sound output under your cable box and tv settings.
that's how I have mine set up. basically the TV does the input switching, not the receiver. the receiver is just there to juice up everything coming out of the TV
*disregard what I said earlier about "analog output." I assumed you meant composite cable when you said "AV cables" in the OP. Since you've gone to all-HDMI, just use HDMI options (with sound, as mentioned earlier)
