i still think they should have tweaked it to make it incompatable with the draft spec just to be dicks. 9/14/2009 9:32:33 AM |

i think it was a pretty safe bet that the IEEE wouldn't make the draft stuff obsolete unless they absolutely had to9/14/2009 11:44:49 AM |

Who is to say they might not have hit some hurdle where they couldn't make it compatible? 9/14/2009 11:50:14 AM |

Well no fucking shit evan. The point still stands, for 99.5% of the population, there was simply no reason to buy N ahead of time. 9/14/2009 3:02:41 PM |

there is precedent to be wary of incompatibility between standard and pre-standard implementations of protocols.
802.3af - many pre and post standard PoE switches and PDs can't talk to each other. Some implement both, though but not all. 802.1s - pre and post standard MST implementations can't talk to each other. I've seen many a network melt down due to this. 9/14/2009 3:45:59 PM |

I need a router now. I don't follow wireless technology very closely. This whole n protocol is news to me. All I know is these n draft 2.0 routers are out there now and claim to be the best. So, is there any reason NOT to get one? 9/14/2009 11:40:29 PM |

true. trying to get people at work to understand you can run power over "DAT SAMEEE WAAIRE" was quite interesting.

^ haha true that. What's funny is that they've been unknowingly using inline power their whole lives if they've ever used POTS, which most people still have.

honestly, other than incompatibilities between standard and pre-standard devices and the occasional software bug, I've rarely seen PoE just completely fail to work (even with multi-vendor implementations).
At least at the enterprise level.
