how the hell did the Z3 qualify for the cash for clunker? there's no way it gets under 18 mpg. 9/24/2009 2:39:45 PM |

A lot of them currently list 19 MPG combined. Not sure how they slid them in as 18 or less...Maybe they have changed it recently? 9/24/2009 2:56:41 PM |

Even though I dont consider my car a clunker (97 BMW Z3 2.8), and it averages about 24 mpg, I checked on the official website and it didnt qualify. Said it was 19 MPG. Maybe it was an M Z3 which probably would qualify.
Honestly, I doubt those nice cars get clunkered...
The dealerships are going to eat the 4 grand (not take the government money), and sell them for more.

^^^ I don't think they can do that. They have to be destroyed.
And some of those cars really should be junked, especially common and dilapidated versions of sporty/sports cars. Like V6 mustangs, 80s C4 Corvettes, and nonturbo Supras 9/24/2009 8:08:06 PM |

Why cant a dealership pay someone 4000$ for a trade in (like they do every day)? Are you being serious? 9/24/2009 9:14:52 PM |

Unless it was falling apart and rusting out; why would a dealer not just pay the dufus trading in the market value.9/24/2009 9:28:03 PM |

nobody said they were going to claim cash for clunkers money. theyre just going to say "hey dumbass guy with a car that's worth more than $4500, i'll give you $4500 for your car IF you buy a new car.. and i'll tell you it's because of cash for clunkers, but in reality i'm just going to sell it for more"

Lot of those cars were rejected for govt funds too. I have friends that work at dealers and some things were rejected by the clunkers program even after the dealer had paid out for them to the customer.
Ones I know were rejected, 2 nice (I use that loosely) 3rd Gen camaros from a dealer on capitol An older BMW 7 series in Raleigh 2 Nice Mercedes from the early 90s.
they all ended up going to Auction. On the same note I was looking through the clunkers at southern states in Raleigh, and the manager said if the Govt had not paid them yet he woudl sell me any of them for the 3500 or 4500 that they had in them. 9/24/2009 10:31:09 PM |

It's $4500 on top of the salvage value of your car as dictated by the dealership and whatever junkyards they are working with.
Salvage value is probably $50-$200. Not enough to matter. 9/25/2009 11:41:40 AM |

and the dealer got to take $50 of the salvage value, so most of them were saying the salvage value was $51 9/25/2009 12:34:24 PM |
