Hey, here's a list of things I like that people have mostly already mentioned

Camera Obscura, Wild Beasts, Vivian Girls, Megafaun, Dan Auerbach (I really thought that came out last year), The Antlers

Phoenix and Girls were both good, not great

Pains of blah blah, xx, and 3/4 of the Bon Iver EP didn't do much for me

I'm glad someone else kind of liked the Wilco album

I feel like The Mountain Goats and Will Oldham probably had new albums this year because they have new albums every year. I don't really remember either, though.

[Edited on October 1, 2009 at 12:10 AM. Reason : 1/2 of the Monsters of Folk album is pretty good also. I think I mentioned that already]

good, solid album. but to highly doubt its possible to have a better album this year creates an argument that would never get cleared up due to comparing it to other genres and tastes that are extremely hard to compare.

I will say that I know for a fact I enjoy Mew's "No More Stories..." more as a whole than I do the AC album. I pick that example because it is at least somewhat comparable stylistically.

so i listened to a couple of these, and they pretty much all seem to suck. to me. and i've never really heard of anything in this thread either, maybe i'm just too much stuck in the "mainstream" or..i dunno.. somebody put down something good.

which did you listen to?

what didn't you like about it?

what other music DO you like?

these are questions that would be very helpful in determining what it is from these lists that you might actually like.

Other than Phoenix, Grizzly Bear and Animal Collective, I've listened to mostly local music. So here's my list in no particular order.

Lonnie Walker- These Times Old Times
Megafaun - Gather, Form & Fly
Bombadil - Tarpits & Canyonlands
Bowerbirds - Upper Air
Americans in France - Pretzelvania
The Kingsbury Manx - Ascenseur Ouvert!
North Elementary - Not for Everyone Just for You
I Was Totally Destroying It - Horror Vacui
Hammer No More The Fingers - Looking For Bruce
Western Civ - Shower the People You Love With Gold
Luego - Taped-together Stories

Not sure if I should include The Love Language since Stu released it last summer ... though it was widely distributed in '09.

There's probably some timeline based on which versions have "Equinox" on them.

whenever people start listing all these bands that I have barely heard of I feel like I am just way out of some sort of loop...but then i realize I have listened to the type of music my entire life and so I dont feel as bad. I also agree with Called to Arms that its impossible to compare albums of the year even within a given type of music. Regardless here is my list in no order

Baroness - The blue record
Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Between the Buried and Me - The Great Misdirect

Omar Rodriqguez Lopez - Xenophanes
Mew - No More Stories...
Mastodon - Crack the Skye

I'm kind of ashamed to say:

Mastodon - Crack the Skye
Kylesa - Static Tensions
Doomriders - Darkness come alive

because i think all of those bands have done better in the past. Maybe that just goes to say some other bands will blow me away in 2010

I have been digging on Shining - VI Klagopslamer but i've played that to death and can't really listen anymore . New The Red Chord album is awesome but i still don't like grindcore

I'm also ashamed to say that the only non-'metal' album i have from 2009 is We play endlessly

I'm AstralAdvent and i think its time for a smiley change
