As much as I despise and HATE everything Florida State, I made this thread for a few reasons:

1). The President and Trustees at FSU should be punched in the face for the way they are turning their backs on the man that won them national championships, brought in donors to build that massive ass stadium, and for the early part of the 90's made FSU looked like 'the shit' for a few years in the ACC.

2). Everytime his squad would play State here in Raleigh, he would always say how much he enjoyed playing in Carter Finley b/c how passionate our fans our and how much we get behind our teams.

3). I cant remember if it was my freshman or sophomore year at State, when we lit them up and beat them while they were ranked, and all the State fans were storming the field I remember this NCSU college student, was running with the masses, and she tripped and fell down and Coach Bowden saw it and he rushed over with his security guard to pick her up and make sure she was ok, while the thousands of State fans(myself included) were cheering about being a top 15 opponent, Bowden was more concerned about the State student's welfare and her being trampled.

4) Florida State, the reason they ascended to the top of the totem pole is b/c of Bobby Bowden, and yes they have had their NCAA sanctions, fall from grace like every other school in the country, but the thing is atleast they GOT THERE, won an ACC Championship or two...won an NCAA football championship..or TWO.....and those piss ant FSU trustees and FSU President can all go to hell if they think they would of gotten there without Coach Bobby Bowden.

I may fucking hate and despise the Seminoles, but Coach Bowden is the class act that got them to the top of the god-damn mountain in the first place!!

I pretty much agree, but he is 80 years old...I guess the boosters figured once he was gonna lose some wins for the violations, the head-to-head against Paterno was farther out of reach, so they figured go ahead and transition towards the OC

From 1973 to 1975, Florida State went 4-29. There was some success in the 1960s and a Fiesta Bowl appearance in 1971, but the football program was basically non-descript and was hardly a player on the national scene. Bobby Bowden was hired in 1976; he went 5-6. Florida State hasn’t had a losing season since.

In just one season Bowden created a program that spent more than three decades among the elite of the elite of the elite. Legendary to the point of being in the discussion of the greatest college football head coaches of all-time by any measure you want to use, Bowden has done more than just make Florida State a football powerhouse, he has become Florida State. That Bowden’s legacy and accomplishments have to be written and acknowledged shows just how quickly a halo can become a noose, to use Bowden’s own words, and how no matter what we do in life and what we accomplish, in the end, we’re all going to get thrown out with the trash.

Of course the wins, the national championships, and the overall numbers are phenomenal (the last time FSU didn’t go to a bowl was 1981, and that was a 6-5 year), but more than that, Bowden has been a dream of a figurehead for the university. Not only has he always won with dignity and humility, but in the face of defeat, even in the most soul-crushing of moments, he has been the model of grace and class for a profession littered with too many petty and despicable human beings. Yes, there have been scandals, and yes, there have been several things that Bowden can be criticized for, but for the most part he has handled off-the-field problems better than just about any big-time head coach ever has. Now his team is 2-3, and now there is a bunch of very silly, very impatient people who feel like their lives will be better if they can push Bowden out to pasture.

Florida State isn’t the superpower it once was, but it’s not like the program has fallen off the map. This is still a very athletic, very talented team that’s young and needs more work and consistency. It’ll be fine, it’ll go to a bowl game, and it’ll win some big games over the rest of the season. But that doesn’t matter. Bobby Bowden can go 0-12 and he should still be allowed to keep his job. He has earned the right to several hundred benefits of the doubt, because this is his program and this is his football team that he created.

To all of those who want to see Florida State football move on and think that you have any sort of right to tell this great icon of college football what to do, conduct yourself like he would. He’s going to handle himself with grace, humor, and honesty, and now it’s up to you to do the same.

You know I was thinking the other day that Joe Paterno and Bobby Bowden are probably in the upper .01 percentage of Octogenarians making $1,000,000 + dollars a year. They are actually working and making money at that age. What other profession can you still make that kind of money at that age and still actually be working? Most others probably retired years ago.

Idk, just kind of an interesting though.

Winning lots and lots of games against weakass ACC opponents doesn't impress me that much. I realize that they didn't join the ACC until 1991, but their record against Florida and Miami isn't all that great.

^^Get the fuck out of here with that. It would be a travesty if they made him quit.

The ACC was so far behind when they arrived in the 1990s it was ridiculous. I don't care how "weak" you want to call the ACC. Georgia Tech, Clemson, UNC and Virginia all had good programs in the 1990s during his peak years and they couldn't touch him. They lost like 2 games in the 1990s in the ACC. Did you forget that he won 2 NATIONAL TITLES? 12 ACC titles speak for themselves regardless what your opinion of the ACC is. He is also 21-10-1 in bowl games against Non-ACC competition. Come on dude.

Funny that almost at any other ACC school this would be completely acceptable. Hell we would love it.

I can see why they'd want him to retire, but I think it's ridiculous that they're trying to push the agenda through the media rather than handle it discreetly and in-house.

I've been a Florida State fan my entire life. I went to school there, my parents went to school there, virtually my entire extended family went there. I was born in 1982, meaning that from the time I was 5 years old in 1987 until the time I was 19 in 2001, FSU played 14 seasons, and never finished out of the top 5. We lost a total of 19 games during that 14-year stretch. Seeing as how these were my formative years, it never occurred to me growing up that FSU could be anything but good.

Having stated my qualifications to comment, here's my take: Bobby Bowden IS Florida State football. We didn't exist before he came along. We're not one of those traditional powerhouses that has been around for 100 years; we didn't even have a football team until the mid-50's. Bowden has earned the right not to be forced out of his position. He has already stated, and signed a deal that he will not coach past 2010, when Jimbo Fisher will be named head coach. I, for one, can put up with another "down" season if it means paying the man his respects for what he's given to our program.

Now, that being said, I do think he is waaayyyyy past his prime, and FSU has virtually no chance at returning to the program we once were under his guidance. What I would like to see happen is that Bobby coaches the rest of this year, celebrates his 80th birthday in a few weeks, and rides off into the sunset to a hero's parade. Whether or not the Jimbo Fisher era is the right answer for us, I don't know. But I'd like to find out.

Also, one other thing:

Quote :

I don't debate that the ACC certainly wasn't much of a conference for our first few years in the league. But the second part of this quote is misleading.

Since Bowden took over in 1976, our record against Florida is 17-17-1. Since 1987, when our "streak" started, we are 13-10-1, and that includes the fact that UF has won the last 5 games against during our current down time and their resurgence.

Against Miami, Bowden's record is 14-21. Not great, but certainly not bad. Since 1987, our record is 10-14 against them, including the game already played this year.

Combining the records against UF and UM, Bowden's overall record is 31-38-1. But since 1987, our record is 23-24-1. Considering that these are two of the best football teams of the past 30 years, I think that's an acceptable record, and just goes to show how great football in Florida can and should be...
