Quote :
"So when a San Francisco administrator spotted someone smoking a cigar on public property, well, he hit the roof. Never mind that the "someone" was Michael Jordan and the public property was Harding Park Golf Course, the host of the Presidents Cup -- heads must roll, baby!

Calling MJ "Spare the Air Jordan" (ha! you see what he did there? clever!), Recreation and Park general manager Phil Ginsburg told the San Francisco Chronicle that he's already sent an email to the PGA Tour that this will not stand. "It was sort of a gentle nudge reminding them that smoking is illegal, and that we would appreciate their support."

Of course, that didn't stop this from turning into a full-scale CigarGate, with everyone from Jordan to Stewart Cink weighing in on the pros and cons of lighting up a stogie. "

Apparently some liberal faggot in San Francisco had their implanted vagina dry up b.c they smelled cigar smoke.

Unless there is a problem with individuals not properly disposing of cigar/cigarette butts, I think the anti-smoking witch hunt has gone to far when one can not even enjoy a find cigar without some politician or officer hardass coming to write you a citation. Given the highly ventilated open air (especially in California) the ZOMG they are harming my health with their smoke argument does not fly.

Isn't the bigger issue here that a person blatantly broke the law, and isn't being pursued because they are famous? It's not as if he could easily afford to pay the fine a million times over.

This. Even if you don't agree with the law, Jordan should still be held to the same standard as anyone else.

I agree, he should be locked up or fined. No one will know how ridicuously stupid such laws are (smoking in what is essentially an open field hurts no one) until they see them in action.

Given the highly ventilated open air, as the OP claims, I suppose it should be fine if I walk around there holding human feces in my hands.

Because I mean... open air, right?

^ You counter factual doesn't work. Carrying human shit around is a health hazard because that carrys the very real risk of spreading diseases.

I am afraid there is not a similar health risk for smoking outside in a public park.

Maybe the golf courses in California are packed like a U2 concert but last time i checked the links are usually pretty open
with pockets of people playing together hole to hole.

So either

A. you are to pussy to ask your buddy to not smoke an offensive cigar

B. The group of guys 2 holes in front of you smoking a cigar does not really effect you but merely peeves your liberal
anti-smoking attitude

C. You got a nose like a blood hound to smell the cigar from the guy 1000 ft away.

(BTW I don't even smoke cigars or cigarettes.)

I... like God support ultra-nanny-state liberal laws that fine people for smoking in such hazerdous environments such as 300 acre sprawling golf courses.

Well as an individual it should be my right that if I want to expose myself to potentially lung cancer causing substances than so bet it. With the occasional social cigar smoker I consider the "threat" level to be nil. No more than the in shape athlete that on the occasion eats a triple thick bacon burger at Hardees, or the average joe that drinks a two beers once a week while out with friends.

Of course you are going to counter with the "but but cigar smoke hurts me too!"; however, I think on a golf course in California the level of toxins you breathe in from local air pollution far exceeds that guy puffing a cigar on the 4th hole.

Just as you have a right to smoke, I have a right not to breathe in your smoke.

If I can smell it, I am breathing it.

^ Excuse me. But you do not have the right to make up facts. According to one of the only peer-reviewed study on smoking outdoors, tobacco smoke from a cigarette is not even detectable to real-time particle instruments after you exceed 2 meters from the source (4 meters if you are down wind). And unlike indoors, levels drop to 0 almost immediately after smoking stops.
http://www.tobaccosmoke.org/files/private/Klepeis_etal_OTS_Preprint.pdf

IOW: If you see a smoker, walk 7 feet away and you're breathing normal air again.

Now, there are certainly situations when smoking outdoors can cause concern (this study talks about examples like patios of restraunts where you may sit close to one or several smokers for long periods of time), but one guy smoking a cigar on a 300 acre golf course IS NOT FUCKING ONE OF THEM.

If you want to argue that MJ smoking a cigar OUTSIDE ON A GOLF COURSE was a health risk to anyone, then you're going to have to back it up with evidence, friend. If you don't have any, then you should probably stfu.

I guess you can just walk 7 feet away from the feces I'm holding in my hands and you'll be breathing normal air again.

Yes. To the one smoking it. Not to the one 300 yards away on the golf course.

Assuming that the bacteria dies in that 7 feet, then maybe.

God,

I could indeed. Are you arguing that human feces are considered a health risk because of the odor they emit? If not, please explain why you think your anlogy is apt.

You do not have the right to "smell". If I fart, you can not sue me for infringing on your right of "smell".

You could argue that you have the right to protect your health. But as I just mentioned, there is no evidence that one guy smoking a cigar on a 300 acre golf course was harming anyone's health but his own. If you disagree, please present the evidence to back up your opinion. If you have no evidence, stfu.

Directly blowing smoke into the face of an unwilling participant in confined quarters where the participant has no ability to remove themselves != A guy smoking a cigar in a field

Chances are, you breathed more carcinogens walking through the parking lot to get to the golf course (never mind driving down the road) than you will breathe in your entire time playing in the same field as Michael Jordan smoking a cigar.

You sure do, on your own property or on property you chose to visit which prohibits smoking or (arguably) on taxpayer owned property.

Someone else's private property? No.

^ he does have a point.

I agree that Jordan shouldn’t be arrested for smoking the cigar, but that doesn’t mean the guy doesn’t have a right or an obligation to say something to Jordan. You can bet if it was anyone else but Jordan, they would have smacked him down even sooner.

But until arguments against things like illegal immigrants can boil down to more than “but they’re here illegally!!” then arguments like this can boil down to that too.

Its too bad MJ was not arrested or fined. He has the money and the juice to fight back against these idiotic fuckers who can't understand that simply seeing someone smoking won't give you cancer.

Actually, no.
I burned a big pile of wood last weekend.
I assure you my neighbors could smell it for at least 1/4 mile away when the wind was blowing in their direction.
I frequently smell my neighbor's pipe and cigar smoke from my own property.
Barring local ordinances you do not have any right to only smelling fresh air just because you are on your own property.
