The only place on my property that has a clear shot of the S/SE sky is by the mailbox. The DirecTV guy that came to install said today that he didn't think they were allowed to install dishes within 15 feet (the highway right-of-way) of the road, though he said he wasn't entirely sure about that and that I should look into it. He also said that the cable can only go so far and that might be at the edge of the limit, cause the dish would be about 80 feet from the front of the house. I'm in Raleigh and there's no homeowner's association to worry about.
Anybody have a dish near the road or know whom I should contact to perhaps obtain permission? 10/13/2009 12:21:10 AM |

i don't see why you couldn't mount it in the right-of-way, just expect to need to move it if they decide they need that right of way. your mailbox is in the right of way, correct?
but like ^^ said, this just seems like a bad idea / eyesore 10/13/2009 12:49:55 AM |

I know numerous people with their satellite runs at 150+ feet. You'll be fine with good quality cable. Also, the satellite is a lot higher in elevation than most people think. The arm on my dish at my last apartment basically pointed right at the building and I was told by an installer there was no chance I'd get a signal, yet I was easily able to pull 97+ on all 5 satellites.
The further from the road, the better. You might can do better than you think though. 10/13/2009 3:25:47 AM |

I think your biggest concern is it being in the Right of Way. You need to contact the City to see if you are allowed to put a Dish there. 10/13/2009 7:29:15 AM |

they are going to say no. thats why it is a 'right of way'
they will also say that it will block DOT mandated sight lines. 10/13/2009 10:17:29 AM |

^99% likely. He asked who to contact though. Since you are not a utility or putting in any kind of community asset approval is unlikely.
As long as you are asking permission to install a dish outside of your property, maybe you should check with your neighbors? I personally wouldn't do that but I'm not the one asking to put up a dish in the ROW. 10/13/2009 11:21:16 AM |

How far from the road does the ROW typically extend? 10 ft? 15 ft? 10/13/2009 12:34:41 PM |

The City can give you an exact answer, so I'm not going to bother guessing a range. They will probably give you the distance from the centerline though.
