the schools that win win because they, as a fanbase, and administration don't accept losing or even mediocrity. We have large amounts of people that would be happy losing in the first round every year in basketball and some november bowl in football. Thats our problem. It all starts with having an AD that won't accept failure. If you have to fire a coach every 3 years for a decade, send the right message.

Even if we were UNC, we would still have doherty as our coach and would be top 10-25 each year but would never be truly great.

Expectations make them who they are and us who we are.

and some people do think we have high expectations but they have confused hopes with expectations. expectations come with consequences. hopes come with o wells.

We hope. They demand.

see, if you werent just a troll, you would be one of the crazies. I woulud LOVE, L-O-V-E, to be in the top 25 every year for 4 or 5 years w/out being "truly great." now, after we have had a few years of that, sure, mabye it is time to see if someone can take us to the next level. the problem is that too many fans want to go straight from where we are to nat'l champs w/ no time b/w, which is nearly impossible.

before herb we were so so so bad, and it took him awhile ot build us back to medicrity, and i think he did a great job doing what he does. the problem was that many state fans expected him to be winning conf championships and beating our rivals (who, unfortunately, were the top teams in the conf) consistently and since was wasnt doing that, they grew tired. if ours fans were a little more patient and our AD a little less of an idiot, things could have ended b/w state and sendek in a way more condusive to getting a top 25 level coach instead of a coach who is learning on the job in the fucking acc. however, the way he did leave, the story wasnt about sendek's skills as a coach, the story was about how bad the state fans are. fair or not, this put a serious dent in our ability to get a new coach.

^^Yes, but it's the truth. Now I will say that Providence last won the Big East basketball title in 1990, so that isn't much better, but a good portion of the BCS schools have won something in about the last 10 to 15 years. Even Iowa has 2 Big Televen basketball ball titles with in about the last 8 years.

^^ & ^ exactly! My point was that all of the listed schools have won a title in a BCS conference at some point since we last did. Miami won the BCS Championship while in the Big East and BC won the Big East Basketball tournament before joining the ACC. Even teams like SMU managed to win something while playing in the SWC with Texas.

oh and you can't really use Southern Methodist as an example. nobody in here should strive for the success SMU had. they are a shame of a program still recovering from the shambles it was left in.

all i'm saying is that 1987 is arbitrary, because if you explicitly remove the last year we won something, you're guaranteed to skew the stats in your favor. that's why i said that the list would be radically different if you picked another year such as 1995 or 2000.

Here's an idea for a non-arbitrary list, how about we take all the BCS schools and rank them according to when they won their most recent championship, no matter when that was, If they don't have one they are automatically tied for last, obviously.

Of course I could, but my point is that all but 8 other schools have won a title in a BCS League/league that featured future BCS teams, in mens basketball, or football since we last did. Not everyone can win every year, but I would even be happy with winning the conference once every 10 years in football, or mens basketball.
