My neighbor just told me that he was attacked this afternoon in the driveway of his house at the corner of Rainford Court and Ferndown Court. When he got home this afternoon he was approached by a black man around 30 - 35 years old who was complaining about some sort of car trouble or being out of gas. When my neighbor refused to let the man into his house he produced a small claw hammer and managed to hit my neighbor in the arm and head before my neighbor fought him off with a pocketknife.

My neighbor went inside, locked his doors, got his shotgun, and called the police. He went back outside to wait for the police when he saw the man still in his yard. He yelled at the man and fired a shot into the air and the man fled down Ferndown Court. At the cul-de-sac at the end of Ferndown he carjacked a minivan from a woman while she was extracting her kids from the vehicle and sped off (thankfully neither the kids or the mom were injured).

Supposedly RPD has recovered the stolen van, but there wasn't word if had found or arrested the man in question.

Anyway, I just wanted everyone to be aware of a dangerous event and to be vigilant and aware of strangers in their neighborhoods.

That entire area around UWoods and UVillage is dangerous b/c of the proximity to S. Saunders/South Charlotte Raleigh. I got robbed at gunpoint in '07 right outside my apartment in UWoods.

Can't believe the guy tried to jack your neighbor with a claw hammer though, thats ballsy.

your neighbor should have shot that motherfucker

good thing he had a pocket knife and was able to put up a fight

a friend of mine was robbed at gunpoint in ivy chase years ago. once he got up to his apartment he pulled out his shot gun (after calling police) and saw the fucker running into the woods and shot after him. its a shame he missed.

Your friend would be rotting in jail today if he had hit him. You sure it's a shame he missed?

Not a good idea to shoot someone who's running away from you.

He told me he thought about it. However, it quickly becomes illegal to do so once they start to flee.

No he shouldn't have and it is a good thing he didn't. If the cops really wanted to be dickheads they could have charged him for just shooting into the air.

It probably would have been better to keep the gun ready, but see if the cops would have been able to roll up while the guy was still there. Now he’s still at large.

What was this dude wearing?

Me and a couple friends ran into a guy in south Raleigh tonight playing some incoherent story about needing gas and somesuch. Pretty sketch, but we were all carrying like we usually do. Wonder if it was the same guy...

There are probably a half dozen black guys peddling the "car trouble/need money for my wife to take the bus back to Greensboro" schtick in the 10 mile radius around campus. I know I've run into a couple.

youre trolllin hard motherfucker

the dude just attacked him with a hammer at his own doorstep, and is fought off, the dude calls the cops and goes back on the porch and still sees the fuckin monkey there....you seriously call this man a stupid mutherfucker for firing a warning shot off?

what exactly did a "warning" shot do here? because at best it accomplished nothing...at worst it scared a suspect and caused him to flee

better yet, how about he fires the warning shot, the perp pulls a pistol and draws down, but the shotgun just got a jam. oops. you never fire warning shots, just like you never point a gun at something you don't intend to shoot. that's day 1 stuff

well..no shit it caused him to leave the homeowner's property

that would be the point, it wasnt to set off fireworks and it certainly wasnt to use calculated trajectory to land the bullet on the dudes head and kill him

it was "look mutherfucker i have a gun dont come around here causin trouble"

the other option would be to detain the man at gunpoint...obviously thats not legal

you dont know if that man might have a piece in his car up the street or anything, or if he was gonna rush at him again and make the homeowner have to actually use lethal force wich is a lot more trouble than its worth considering you could possibly diffuse the entire situation with a warning shot

they aint teachin self-defense at gun ranges retard. seriously. come on now

they teach you not to spray mace in enclosed spaces but sometimes you gotta do what you gotta do

a firearm can jam anytime, whether a warning shot was fired or not, if the guy had a gun then thats another story but this dude had aan immediate interest to defend

when youre about to get hit by a train you dont stop and wonder if theres a car speeding down the other side of the track before jumping out of the way

^^truth.
He could have pointed it at the guy, or kept it at low ready, but the warning shot was dumb.

Still why I have a gun next to me right now though.

^^^Shotguns rarely jam, if ever. Besides, it could just as easily jam on the first shot. He hit the mother fucker with a hammer, forgive a slight lapse in rationality.

You best be trollin' BTW

nah i dont buy that as truth

i feel like the guy felt like he knew the guys mental state and his physical prowess, and overall condition better than you would and did what was appropriate without using any sort of force aside from what was necessary to divert the attack

granted he may get a charge, im not sayin he was legally in the clear

im sayin in the heat of the moment he did right by me

hell who knows, maybe the damn strike by the claw hammer fucked his hand up and he didnt feel like he could aim the shotgun properly or even wield it enough to thwart a second attack by this lingering threat

I'm not a violent person, but I'd feel like shooting a mother fucker after he senselessly tried to beat my ass with a hammer at my own home. You can't hate on someone for being human, which in this case, caused a slightly irrational move out of anger or fear. The way I see it, the shotgun blast diffused the shit out of the situation and kept the man from further being injured. Sucks the criminal is still out there, but you got to protect yourself first and foremost.

shut the fuck up with this troll shit. while I don't advocate warning shots and I'm not saying whether I agree or disagree with what this guy did, it was done in fear of his life, with adrenaline pumping, and anger abundant. None of us know how we will react in this situation, unless you've been extensively trained and/or you've been in this situation. so shut the fuck up with your condescending and offensive remarks, especially against those not even involved in this situation.

heh, my AK is currently sitting next to my bed cause I pulled it out recently to clean it, and I've sometimes wondered what kind of reaction I would get if I grabbed it for self defense in a situation like this

unfortunately "scary" guns don't play well in self defense cases. If they did (and I had the money) I'd own a suppressed MP5 for home use

This. The only reason I don't keep an AR-15 or an AK under the bed. An otherwise perfect defensive carbine is completely tainted in court by the idiot media and politicians.

I can see it now - "Look at this evil scary MACHINE GUN the defendant used! He must think he's Rambo or something!" ("that's not a machine gun...")

So we're all left with the ever-classic, but sufficient 500's and 870's under our beds.

^yeh, retarded. when using deadly force you always shoot center of mass (or less PC stated... shoot to kill). you're a moron if you try for a disabling, disarming, etc shot. not only is it much more difficult it could potentially get you killed or in trouble. if you aren't shooting to kill then you aren't in enough danger to be shooting at all.

Yeah, that is retarded. You shoot to kill, not to disable. Plus, if he's dead, the police really only have your story to go off of. Attack me with a weapon, striking me in the head, and we'll see if I'll be calm enough to let you live while I wait for the police to come pick up your sorry ass.

even if someone attempted to murder you and failed, you are not allowed to just go out and murder them in retribution, especially if you've safely removed yourself from immediate danger.
