"Dear Friends,

Sumaiya has asked me to announce the following talk at UNC on Thursday.
Very interesting! See details below. -- Afroz

=====================

Join UNC Aasha on this Thursday to learn about the growing problem of acid
throwing in Bangladesh. Acid throwing, the practice of throwing with
hydrochloric acid or sulphuric acid on the faces and bodies of victims, is
a common form of domestic violence for women in areas across the globe.
Aasha is inviting Rotary World Peace Graduate Jane Welsh to speak about
the history of acid throwing and the factors that influence this practice.

Date: Thursday, October 29th
Time: 6pm
Location: Bingham 301 (UNC Chapel Hill)
For more information: watch this short youtube video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7fvl3QFVTc
and visit our facebook event:
http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=162568288959
Contact: sumaiya@email.unc.edu

About Jane Welsh:
Jane Welsh is a recent Rotary World Peace Graduate in the Department of
Anthropology at UNC Chapel Hill. Her Dissertation “It was like burning in
hell: A multi-country exploration of acid attack violence” investigates
the issue of acid attack violence in Bangladesh, India and Cambodia. Acid
attack violence is the intentional throwing of battery acid onto another
person with the intention of disfigurement. Previously Jane lived in
Bangladesh and Cambodia and worked with acid attack survivors at the Acid
Survivors Foundation and the Association of the Blind in Cambodia. In this
presentation, Jane will discuss this human rights violation and efforts by
individuals and organizations to combat it."
