if you had windows 7 demo, that also allows you the upgrade price.

it is, but you can install it without having a previous copy. i had to do that cause I bought 7 then my hard drive died and I went to buy a new one.

Quote : | "Thanks to Kevin Fisher and a bit of testing, I have a simple workaround that does work.
After performing the clean install, ensure that there are no Windows Updates pending that would require a system reboot. (You'll see an orange shield icon next to Shutdown in the Start Menu if this is the case).
Then, open regedit.exe with Start Menu Search and navigate to:
HKLM/Software/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/Setup/OOBE/
Change MediaBootInstall from "1" to "0".
Open the Start Menu again and type cmd to display a shortcut to the Command Line utility. Right-click this shortcut and choose "Run as administrator." Handle the UAC prompt.
In the command line window, type: slmgr /rearm
Then tap ENTER, close the command line window and reboot. When Windows 7 reboots, run the Activate Windows utility, type in your product key and activate windows.
Voila! " |
Easy and it worked for me. I don't feel bad cause I did have a copy of Vista, my HD just died and I'll be damned if I was going to install one OS just to install a second. Fuck that.
Oh, this threw me for a loop too, but if you're clean installing, the first time you install 7, just leave the key blank and it'll let you into 7 for the whole 30 days thing. Then, follow those directions.

In case there is any question, I upgraded my netbook from Windows XP Home to Windows 7 Professional using the $29.99 student version. I had no problems whatsoever. 10/30/2009 12:05:58 AM |

Apparently, adding a windows.old directory to the root directory will also allow you to activate.

you can get the full version by calling M$ and asking for it. Still $30
No, it isn't.
you just call M$ and tell them you want to download the full copy of the student version. you pay over the phone, they send you an e-mail, and then you download the full version.
