leaked to what.cd last night as well. it's nice being able to let the album play all the way through instead of clicking around youtube. it's also nice that it has it's own thread now since no one is talking about it in the music 2009 thread. guess i shoulda thought of that sooner.

i'd definitely compare it to QOTSA more so than foo fighters or led zeppelin, but there's still something distinctly different about a lot of it. it's pretty obvious grohl and jones have brought things to the table as well as opposed to just playing instruments for more of homme's material.

oh well check out Desert Sessions, if you dig qotsa.

its basically everything he does in his spare time minus the Eagles of Death Metal side project. Homme has been a musical genius since Sons of Kyuss.

so rolling stone gave the album 3.5 out of 5 stars, just like they do for every other album they review unless it bashes george bush, praises democrats, was done by u2 or coldplay, or was influenced by u2 or coldplay.

Quote :
"Ladies and gentlemen, Them Crooked Vultures — the second-best band John Paul Jones has ever been in! The Led Zeppelin guys never made much of a splash in the supergroup scene, unless you're the kind of die-hard fan who still busts out those old records by the Honeydrippers or the Firm. But when John Paul Jones got the hard-rock supersession itch, he didn't mess around. For Them Crooked Vultures, he hooks up with Dave Grohl (Foo Fighters) and Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age), two of Zep's smartest disciples. If these three 800-pound gorillas want to bash out an album as willfully weird and slapdash as Them Crooked Vultures, who can tell them not to? And if they do a song called "Elephants" where they basically crunch every riff on Led Zeppelin II into seven dizzy minutes, why not?

On Them Crooked Vultures, the three rock stars don't exactly visit the depths of Mordor. The album sticks to the sort of low-end guitar boogie that Homme and Grohl were blasting in their Camaros when they bummed their first cigarettes. The first thing you hear is Grohl's instantly recognizable drums whomping out "Nobody Loves Me & Neither Do I," as Homme plays desert-rat guitar and Jones adds a bass line as nasty as "Out on the Tiles." Homme takes almost all the lead vocals, but he doesn't try to define or dominate the songs, mostly doing lyric goofs like "Slick back my hair/You know the devil's in there."

Sometimes the music sounds exactly like Zeppelin, as on "Reptiles," a sly update of "South Bound Suarez." Other times it sounds like Queens of the Stone Age with a hot new bassist. But it's not desperately ambitious — the album sounds like the good-natured quickie it probably was. Jones plays a few keyboard solos in "Mind Eraser, No Chaser" and "Scumbag Blues," and though Homme doesn't sing like Robert Plant (his upper register sounds more like Cream's Jack Bruce), he does deliver loads of Jimmy Page doppelgänger solos, just to prove he can.

Despite the fact that Jones has spent most of the past three decades doing ornate orchestral arrangements (most smashingly on R.E.M.'s Automatic for the People), he doesn't get fancy here. He puts all his mojo into forward motion, reminding you he's the bass man who helped give the world "Black Dog." But the stylistic asides here add a bit of flavor. The superbly titled "Interlude With Ludes" is a psychedelic ditty with a circus-style loop, as Homme muses, "On the good ship Lollygag/LSD and a bloody pile of rags/I hate to be the bearer of bad news/But I am." "Warsaw or the First Breath You Take After You Give Up" is a daffy eight-minute Doors tribute. And "Caligulove" is, well, a song called "Caligulove."

Homme and Grohl are old hands at this kind of thing — see their excellent Zeppelin homages on the Queens' Songs for the Deaf. But they definitely seem inspired by Jonesy's presence, and he helps them keep it light. Homme and Grohl pound away like fanboys touched with the spirit, as if jamming with one of their heroes brought out their wanton side. That's what makes Them Crooked Vultures fun: It's fan fiction with a classic-rock heart.

-ROB SHEFFIELD"

this is the same reviewer who gave green day's new album 4.5 stars

Quote :
"They revitalize the whole idea of big-deal rock stars with something to say about the real world. They're keeping promises they never even made, promises left behind by all the high-minded Nineties bands that fell apart along the way. If it's a continual surprise that Green Day are the ones to pick up the torch and run with it, that's part of what makes 21st Century Breakdown so fresh and vital — Green Day sound like they're as shocked as anyone else."

this is why i don't give a shit about anything anyone from rolling stone has to say

I never understood why people listen to a reviewer's opinion about music.
I mean its only 60 minutes of content, you can usually tell by 1 minute if it sucks or not. Then by 10 minutes you know pretty much whether you're going to ever listen to it again or not.

Most bands don't make concept albums so its not like a movie review where you review the sense of style, the plot, the presentation and all that other crap. It generally boils down to 1) whether or not its an interesting sound/musicianship and 2) lyrical content/vocals skills.

I do however like metal-archives because unlike other sites the people on there who review are users who have similar tastes with everyone who is typically reading a review. I can't expect a magazine to review TCV, Nickleback and No Doubt all in the same light because, well one of those things is not like the others.

^ i generally don't give a shit about what reviewers think. usually i just browse message boards and check out the general consensus from regular people. but when something i like comes out i do kind of like to read reviews from rolling stone and pitchfork just so i can at them.

hey buddy

my three favorite bands are pearl jam, u2 and led zeppelin (it doesn't mean that all i listen to is rock or rhythm and blues)

it doesn't mean i don't listen to a lot of new music (or that i feel the need to push indie bands into my nostalgic top 10 list)

and it doesn't mean i don't listen to a lot of old music (i probably listen to more pre-60s music than any other wolfwebber)

but you gotta let that review stuff go

the new album is awesome for the peeps who want to listen to it

^^ my 3 favorite bands are pearl jam, led zeppelin, and my morning jacket. i'm used to some of that material not being well received by reviewers from rolling stone, pitchfork, and all music. their opinions have little to no bearing on my enjoyment. like i said, i just like to read their reactions because half the time reviewers either say nothing (i.e. rolling stone's review of TCV), or they just obviously didn't get what the band was going for. for instance, whoever reviewed pearl jam's yield from all music gave it 2.5 stars out of 5, and his only reason why was pretty much because it didn't rock hard enough. a majority of pearl jam fans i have met say yield is their favorite or at least the band's strongest album. i was just pointing out rolling stone's reviewers being unable to deviate from their standard practices outside of those situations i listed.

please do not love me because those are my favorite bands

in no way are those the "best bands"

those are just my favorites

there is a plenty of better music out there, those are just my favorite bands due to things like puberty, lawn mowing, beer drinking, etc

best music would probably never even encounter a "rock" band

except maybe

BAND OF GYPSYS
