I currently live in wolf village and am I just using internet through an ethernet cable from the wall. But I want to create a wireless network so I don't have to be plugged in. I have a Netgear router right now. I plugged my router into my laptop via an ethernet cable and did some set-up stuff on the router (used online instructions to configure the router). Then I tried to create a network (i use Vista) and it works, but I don't see the network I've just made on the choices of wireless networks to choose from. How do I set up a wireless network? Does it have to do something with having NCSU allow your computer to get through the network or something??

Substitute modem with wallplate.

Make sure the cable from the wall is going into the WAN port.

So I have to have another computer to connect the wireless router to?? I thought the wireless router just transmits the signal and the laptop can pick it up. Cause thats the setup I had....ethernet cable from wall to Netgear router...and then router said it was trasmitting. but my laptop wouldnt connect.

And how do you tell which the WAN port is?

The WAN port should be labeled on the back of the router. You don't have to physically connect the laptop to manage the router. If the router is using the default settings, the WLAN SSID will probabaly be netgear and it won't have a password. If your laptop will connect to the wireless router, you can get to the router settings by navigating to 192.168.1.1 in your web browser address bar. From there you can set up WAP which I highly recommend in order to keep your neighbors from stealing your intarwebz.

This is true. You don't need a hard wired connection if everything is working as it should. BTW, your laptop won't connect automatically. You'll have to manually choose the wireless network you want to connect to.

Well I just tried that and a network called NETGEAR popped up but it wont let me connect to it. It says its not broadcasting or whatever.

And when I go to 192.168.1.1 it wont connect

try unplugging the power cord of the wireless router...wait about 15 seconds, and then plug it back in.

Wait another 30 seconds or so and then try to connect to the wireless network again.

Thanks but I'm not a troll. I tried doing what tnezami said and it helped a little bit. The network went from just nothing to "Low Signal" at least. And I tried to connect but it said it could not for 1 of two reasons. 1. that the signal is too low to connect because the router is too far away from the computer, which is impossible because the router is 6 inches from my laptop 2. that the SSID information on my computer did not much up with that of the router....

So i tried unplugging and replugging again to see if it would fix it, but then it just went back to being blank and not transmitting instead of at least a "Low Signal" (1 bar). So it looks like the problem is number 2 from above, what can I do to fix this though??

You should plug directly into the router and IP your laptop 192.168.1.55. Then try to go to the 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.1.100 , whatever is the default (you can look it up online for that model). Then configure everything from there.

If that doesn't work, press the reset button for 20 seconds, while still holding it, unplug and replug the power, then let go. If this doesn't work RTFM.
