We should go after Tommy Tub and the great midmajor coaches from TCU, Utah, Boise and BYU first. Then we should look for the more hidden midmajor coaching gems like Fresno, Central michigan and Skip Holtz. If none of those bite then the defensive coordinator from TCU or offensive coordinator from Boise will work.

Personally, I think cowher is never out of the picture and Weis might even be hanging around with a point to prove at the end of the season. Worst case scenario, theres a bunch of hidden "chuck's" like orgeron that are hella recruiters, had decent programs that could never get over the top and are on some teams staff in a weird position like "line coach" just waiting for a job.

^ I 100% agree Chris Petersen at Boise State would be amazing he is one of my favorite coaches in football but I'm not sure if he would come to the East Coast. I'm not saying have Skip Holtz at the top of the list with Tuberville and all but he should definitely be considered. I think Cowher would be the best but I think it would take at least 5 years 25 - 30 million to get him and even then I'm not sure if he wants to coach at the college level

that has nothing to do with it. kentucky fired their coach overnight and calipari came for the raise. calipari was convinced he was coming here and memphis gave him more money. it had nothing to do with herb being fired. no coach worth hiring is thinking "what if i suck and they fire me early like they fired that guy?"

if you haven't noticed, every school he has gone to has ended up in some kind of recruiting scandal that he is supposedly free of. i don't think he is going to win a national merit badge for complete honesty.

also, you don't think we could have outpaid memphis for a head coach? the fanbase was so riled up to get a big name when we ran herb off that we have some donors that would have paid anything to get a name like calipari here. we did not simply get outbid. he used us, wanted to be there all along, and got his money.

^^^^^comparing us to Duke is not really fair. Any halfway decent coach was going to be able to turn Duke around to a degree. They may have had two the most inexperienced, inept head coaches back to back in ACC football history. Hiring someone with an offensive pedigree like Cutcliffe was going to pay very quick dividends for Duke.

I know this argument is weakened some because they beat us head to head, but the point still stands that as long as Duke hired a decent head coach then they were going to improve quickly.

i talked to mrs. cowher about this for awhile (and with bill about it briefly). he was asked, seriously considered it but decided it wasn't the time, but he still thinks about making it his last coaching position before he retires. he was very happy with o'brien being picked. this is a first person conversation, no he said she said stuff, so lets please put this to rest.

besides, its a year or two too early to be calling for o'brien to be replaced

Why don't we build a coach? We could engineer a coach that would dominate the acc. He could have a built in analog clock to help with clock management and lasers for eyes to stare at the other sideline. We could drop him from the fumblecopters with a parachute.
