Sucked

http://www.newsobserver.com/sports/college/ncstate/story/199567.html

Quote :
"A seven-year snapshot of graduation rates released Wednesday by the NCAA placed the N.C. State men's basketball program in the bottom half of the ACC academically.

The latest seven-year graduation success rates, or GSRs, painted a different picture than the Academic Progress Rates released in May by college athletics' governing body. Using a different formula and examining a different time frame, the previously released APRs placed the Wolfpack men's basketball team atop the ACC, with an Academic Progress Rate score of 995 out of possible 1,000. The APR measured the progress toward graduation of students who entered school from 2004 through 2008.

However, according to Wednesday's GSRs, which examined the records of student-athletes entering school from 1999 through 2002, N.C. State's GSR in men's basketball was 45 percent, ninth-best among the ACC's 12 schools.

N.C. State's football program also posted a GSR, for students entering from 1999 through 2002, of 57 percent, a rate trailing those of the other five Football Bowl Subdivision schools in the Carolinas. It also put the Wolfpack's graduation success rate at 11th out of 12 ACC football."

Does this take into account all of our players that leave school early to enter the NBA or NFL?

Oh shit, that's right. We're talking about NC State.

The article doesn't give a ton of info unfortunately. The spokesperson for State says the spring rankings are more accurate, but I don't know why the same wouldn't be said for the other schools in the conference.

I know we've had players like Evtimov, and more recenlty Baker (woo hoo the NCAA gave him another year!) who have had injuries that impacted their playing careers, but is Ilian Evtimov singlehandedly dragging down our bball ratings?

transfers and kids leaving the program in general for what ever reason can effect the rating

With Amato, I am not all that surprised. We had a decent number of guys go pro early and no one ever accused a lot of our football players of being geniuses

A little more surprised with Sendek. My question is how do transfers factor into this? What if a guy leaves State and graduates from another school? Does that count against us? We had a few of those as well as a few early entries into the NBA.

^ok, if transfers hurt it then i can understand. 45% still seems low to me

"Under the federal methodology, a student-athlete who transfers from one Division I college to another is treated as a nongraduate at the first and is ignored in the calculation at the second even if he or she graduates,“ added Todd Petr, the NCAA's managing director of research"

so transfers out of the program do hurt us. that makes the number a little more understandable

^that seems dumb...why not ignore it for both, or do something that doesnt penalize your academic standing for a kid transferring

^yeah, transfers have much more to do with a kid than a certain school 95% of the time.

Why do people even pay attention to this shit? The whole "student athelete" thing is a joke (for football and basketball anyway) in EVERY school, and hardly anyone (who's good) stays the whole four years. I would think a high graduation rate would be more of a novelty than than something that's expected.

You quoted information about the federal rate. The next paragraph after your quote describes the NCAA's new alternative (GSR). The numbers at the start of the thread are based on the GSR, not the federal rate. Here's a bit from that next paragraph:

Quote :
"Like the federal rate, the NCAA's new Graduation Success Rate starts with all freshmen who enter a given college in a given year. But it then excludes from the denominator those athletes who leave the institution in good academic standing, and includes in the numerator those who transfer in to the institution and proceed to graduate."

This implies us + 5 more...

UNC
Duke
Wake
ECU
?????

Who else counts as FBS? I thought every other school in the state was either FCS or DII...or did they just screw up and its supposed to say 4 other?

Clearly, the method used is incorrect, b/c as we all know, Herb Sendek is a quality basketball coach and human being and would NEVER settle for horrible academic performance. The N&O, ESPN and Gregg Doyel would have me believe no different.
