I am in the process of Converting old VHS home movies to .mpeg and eventually onto dvd.

The problem is that a lot of these tapes are boring as hell and I want to add an optional dvd commentary, meaning somewhere in the menu I can switch this extra audio layer on and off. I have googled to no avail.

So the question is how do I add an extra audio track to serve as "commentary" on footage, similar to just about every dvd movie commentary?

Some things to keep in mind:
-I am a complete video editing noob
-I do have access to some video editing software (Corel VideoStudio)

meh

easiest way to do it is to first get some real video editing software.. you can download adobe CS4 and use it free (legally) for 30 days. it includes adobe premiere which is super easy to use and will do this very easily.

you'd basically end up playing the movie in whatever video playing program you have then recording sound in something else.. again, up to you. CS4 comes with a soundbooth program that i think will handle doing this. then it's just a matter of importing the video and sound files into premiere and moving them around to your liking

very very easy

np, lemme know if you need help. there might be (and probably is) a simpler way to do all of this in Premiere..but I'm no expert.

I'd seriously suggest downloading it though..it's a good product

You actually want Adobe Encore, not Premiere to do the mastering, audio tracks etc.

You can use Premiere to do the conversion from tape->mp2 though.

Okay, i'll try encore then. Right now I've got my VHS converting to .mpg,

but you're saying I need mp2? I've never done this before so I'm pretty clueless. In the software I'm using to convert vhs to digital, I chose 'DVD' which is encoding to .mpg which I figured is fine. Do I need to convert it to mp2 now?

Just ran Encore, not really sure where to start with that shit. I guess I might need to read some tutorials, unless someone is kind enough to point me in the right direction.
