The old topics were too old.

Boxee unveiled their new boxee beta and their upcoming tv box. Looks pretty cool. I assume Hulu will drop support again because the tv execs will be shitting their pants when they see an average user can drop cable/dish for as little as $200. I for one use a mac mini on my tv and can't wait for this beta to come out since the alpha does not play nice with snow leopard and the apple remote.

I was just getting ready to build an HTPC. If this thing is actually going to materialize in the next six months for $200 and will handle 1080p playback I may wait.

How is Boxee's art detection nowadays? I still can't find anything close to the TV-Series and Moving Pictures plugins for MediaPortal.

TheTVDB = same as TVSeries
IMDb = same as Moving Pictures

not sure why you complain about this so much, 7MC, VMC, Boxee, XBMC all have the ability to scrape from the same sources automatically.

and will it support blu-ray via usb drive?

what i'm looking for:
blu-ray playback (i don't want to burn blu-ray i get from netflix)
netflix streaming
pandora streaming
PC/WHS media streaming (at min. DivX support, MKV would be great)
usb media playback

not required, but would like:
hulu
youtube
other internet tv content
picasa/flickr for photos

currently i'm looking at the Samsung BD-P3600 (~$230):
http://www.samsung.com/us/consumer/tv-video/blu-ray/blu-ray-players/BD-P3600A/XAA/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail

the WD TV Live doesn't support blu-ray
the popcorn hour is expensive ($300+$100 blu-ray drive + enclosure + hard drive, mediocre UI)
the Myka ION is expensive (+$600 do do all this)
...

looking to get rid of my mediaPC as i don't use the TV tuner card hardly at all.

^^^Look for "boxee" on isohunt, it should be your first result (boxee-0.9.20.9647).

^^It's highly unlikely it will support Blu-Ray since the decoders are expensive to license.

Anyone having issues with the Netflix app? I just get a red box with white text saying tie my account to boxee but can't see the login boxes.

Anyone having issues with thumbnails being pulled from Picasaweb?

Also how do you show the weather, or is it limited to just the icon in the upper right?

I see it has Autoplay for DVD, will that work with Blu-ray assuming I have PowerDVD installed?

been playing with the alpha all weekend, signed up for the beta and heard it worked better on Ubuntu Karmic which would be nice to try. Tried looking around on the usual places for a tar of the beta but never found one.

We're definitely going to cut the cable cord sometime soon to save some money so I guess I just need to decide on building my own boxee box or waiting for the Dlink product.

A word of warning about those torrents you guys. Those versions are not the most up to date so if you do have any issues, please keep in mind that they could be fixed in a recent build. If you could, make sure that you search http://jira.boxee.tv and if the issue does not exist, report it. New beta builds should be around the corner especially with CES starting up on Thursday, but the most recent public build numbers are:

0.9.20.10063 - Mac OSX 10.4+ (Intel Only)
0.9.20.10063 - Windows XP/Vista/7
0.9.20.10066 - Ubuntu Linux 9.04/9.10 x86 32bit
0.9.20.10069 - Ubuntu Linux 9.10 (Karmic) x86 64bit

Note that those are the version numbers of the install file and not the internal number within the general settings of Boxee. Boxee comes out of private beta at CES, so get excited and read to download it if you haven't already.

^ Great to have you on board! I too am a Windows Boxee user.

^^ Boxee is a fork of the XBMC project. Boxee actively contributes back significant code changes to the XBMC source. Similarly, Boxee pulls significant fixes/mods from the XBMC project into new versions. Where they differ is in terms of perspective. Boxee is more of a social media center designed to network various sources of media (cbs, hulu, netflix, pandora, etc) and allow you to share what you find interesting with your friends. All while managing your local media as well. There are also plans to integrate facebook and twitter into your recommendation feed. A lot of code has been rewritten to get it to this point to get it to integrate various media sources. An example of this would be if you go to "TV Shows" and search for say "House". Boxee will add "House" to your list of shows, pull in any local episodes on your machines as well as other sources (like hulu), and then let you pick/choose from where you want to watch it from.

Boxee is generally gearing toward a solution that pretty much anyone would find easy to use with a friendly interface. XBMC is more of a customizable media center geared for someone with a bit more technological knowledge. The new XBMC interface is pretty slick I admit, but Boxee takes a different approach with its interface in the current beta.

They both have their strong points. I prefer Boxee however for its social aspects and its growing integration with various media sources. It's a very "couch friendly" media center.

Listening to the Engadget Live Podcast right now and those guys are talking about the Boxee Box. They are saying it's the most impressive thing they've seen at CES this year.

The back of the remote has a qwerty keyboard on it.

^ Yes, the remote will be sold separately for those of you that have a custom box already built. A USB dongle will allow for the remote to communicate with your machine.

This is for anyone that can help. I setup a mac mini with the new boxee beta. I setup the smb sharing on an imac that has all the media on it and connected to it via a usb hard drive. Boxee found it and added the content in the movie/tv sections in the program itself. The only thing is when I click on a movie it does not give me a play option instead it says local or something like it. No matter what I do I can not stream that content. What am I doing wrong?

I have the network setup via a airport express which should give me decent N streaming speeds. Am I crippling the content by having it on an external drive? Any thoughts would be helpful.

I'm not sure I follow. If it says "Local File" when you click on the media you should be able to watch it from your share. I don't think sharing from an external is "crippling the content" at all. This might just be a permissions problem.

Here's a great video on setting up sharing on a Mac:

As a side note, if any of you guys are Conan fans I have an app out right now as a result of the current goings on w/ him and NBC. Just updated it as a result of Hulu repeatedly blocking my attempts to scrape their feed data. Probably will keep the app on my repository for another week or so. Just depends on the future of Coco and if Hulu keeps finding ways to annoy me.

I am having much better luck with the newest version of the beta for mac. Quick question. Currently the setup is 1 imac and 2 mac mini's. The imac has all the content and the entire network is using an airport express.

For the life of me I can not get iphoto from the imac to be recognized on either of the mac mini's in boxee (it works in iphoto itself). Normally to share I need to go into the sharing folder in system preferences and find any and all folders to share, the only thing is iphoto does not allow you to actually share the folder. Any ideas?

boxee is a pos. It cant recognize most of my tv even tho they're named properly and many of my movies it detects wrong.

It thinks \\FUNKYTOWN\Video\Movies\The Dark Knight (2008)\The.Dark.Knight.avi is Kung Fu Panda.

What a load of crap. Windows media center + media browser is 10000x better

^^Word. Although I like the idea of Boxee, I'm actively using Windows 7 Media Center with MediaBrowser and MediaScout.

http://www.mediabrowser.tv/
http://www.codeplex.com/TVScout/

Boxee still has a ways to go for local content indexing, although it does integration of web content very nicely.

i've been using media browser + metabrowser (http://themetabrowser.com/)

xbmc seems to have no problem picking up tv show info or movie info. So idk what boxee broke when they forked. I may look into xbmc plugins cause while media browser/wmc is cool, the UI is a little too slow and i like the web app stuff.

Instead of going off on it, could you please be helpful and report incorrectly resolved movies to:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dGMxVWZhQUdfcVdIZG5HOXpVMFRqNlE6MA

This is a result of recently changing databases from TheTVDB to license IMDB officially for legal reasons. There's still some kinks being worked out. Thanks. Manual movie/tv resolution is set to return in a coming build (http://jira.boxee.tv/browse/BOXEE-3320).

I guess i just dont understand why imdb in xbmc would work fine, but not in boxee. Or how "the dark knight" could ever possibly get transformed into "kung fu panda".

For something thats supposed to be released with supporting hardware soon it seems like they're pretty far off from a completed product.
