I have a Brother HL-1440 printer connected to my desktop PC running XP. I have my printer shared and can connect to it using my Vista Laptop but there seems to be some driver issue as everything comes out as garbage. I'm not really sure how drivers work over a network so these are the things I have tried:

1. Install Vista driver on laptop. No luck
2. Let laptop find driver automatically by connecting printer to laptop. I can print correctly in Vista with the printer connected over USB, but then get the same garbage symbols when printing from Vista when returning the printer to the XP desktop.
3. Install additional drivers on the XP desktop and allow Vista laptop to find these drivers on connection. No option to add Vista driver

I've given up for today, but tomorrow I will try printing over the network from an XP laptop and see if that helps.

Can anyone think of what I could be doing wrong? Google and the brother website have been no use.

Update

Printing over the network using an XP based laptop was successful. I'll probably call Brother over the weekend to see if they have any suggestions.
