Perhaps this has been done before, but I don't remember. If it was it might have been while I was deployed and had no internet access. I know I personally have been on here for about 7 years or so, and back when I was in school I bought a lot of random crap from people, as well as selling a bunch of random crap. The best three experiences though were the following:

Someone posted a free dog that my wife and I adopted. Her name is Haley and she has been totally awesome. I wish I remembered the person who gave it to us... I think his name was Bob but I don't remember 100%:

Another thing was poker. When I first joined TWW was about the time Chris Moneymaker was making Texas Hold'em a household game. I saw a tournament on here and joined and have been playing ever since. I met a lot of really awesome people who are still friends today, and I have made probably $25,000 or so since that first tournament (which went pretty badly). I also got into playing frisbee golf with a lot of those people. Good times.

Lastly, I took two jobs as a result of TWW. One was at the Icehouse announcing and keeping score for adult hockey leagues. The other was mowing lawns. Both of these were awesome experiences and lots of fun.... things I really didn't even consider jobs because I really enjoyed what I was doing.

Anyway thanks TWW for making my college years (and even my years now) a better place!

That's why this site is such a success. You have lots to gain from it if you can get past the trolls and realize that most people on here are just muckin around. I have fun with it.

Built my media server computer with some parts jackleg was selling several years ago.

Got my roomates for the semesters I was back in Raleigh while I was copping from here. all the semesters ended up being good times.

Ended up getting a job from a posting qtpie put up for my last semester in school.

Also freelanced on a project schapnel needed done.

I think a lot of the success is from geographic proximity of most of the users.

Ahhh man how could I forget maybe the most important of all for me. I learned about the existance of P90X from a thread on this site. With a little more research and a lot of motivation I have been able to turn myself from a fairly overweight and lethargic guy to someone who is really fit and in great shape (I have pics in my gallery but I'll leave those to the P90X thread).

TWW I love you. Merry Xmas!!

We found Darby on TWW almost 4 years ago, and she's been such an important part of our little 'family'.
TWW has also allowed my bf to make money he otherwise wouldn't have.
TWW has provided me a forum to vent about stuff, considering I mainly have guy friends that hate to listen... and even though TWW has bitched me out about venting, it's fine because it's on the internet
TWW has lent me advice on where to eat, which lawyer to hire (which was not so great advice), where to go on vacation for cheap, and has always been more informative on news stories than WRAL.
DARBY!

i met WillemJoel on here like 5 years ago and invited him to my 20th birthday party.
we've been close ever since.
i <3 that guy.

not too mention JTMONEYNCSU.
invited him to a coming home party for cody about a year and a half ago.
even though i made a thread and all...he was the only one who came
one of cody and my go to guys for anything <3.
come over and play games, rides, or a lunch buddy.

also i found an unusual friendship with God.
it's kinda weird. we have no issues "internet screaming" at each other and still chat later
i feel like i learn a lot from him, because we're different

im sure i can think of other things but those three are the first to come to mind.

the most meaningful thing was when my childhood dog was dying from a tumor in her liver, msb2ncsu got his wife to keep an eye on bailey while she was at the vet school. you will never know how much having someone on the inside helped us deal with the whole situation. bailey had surgery to remove the tumor, but she couldn't clot and ended up dying a couple days after surgery. seeing bailey like that the day before she died was the more horrible experience i've ever had, but the support we received from tww meant the world to my mom and me. we sent a thank you note to msb2ncsu's wife, but it wasn't nearly enough. this happened 2 years ago but i still get really upset thinking about it
message_topic.aspx?topic=460197

i also got support, advice, help when my grandmother was dianosed with a rare kidney cancer. she is doing much better, minus 1 kidney, although still worse off than before. it doesn't help that my grandfather had a stroke and is now crazy, and also was just diagnosed with lung cancer.

lots of tech advice & help

a new employee, beallred

my half manx kitten, yoshi

my brother's newfoundland mix pup

hours of entertainment, news & details that local outlets don't have or before they get it

I've gotten info about Raleigh, places to eat, other cities & places to visit on vacations, info about NCSU, what classes to take, & events going on in the area, received random tips & advice about lots of various things, and I when I had to interview someone for cultural geography class I met Firas by means of TWW.

ditto on that.

In addition:

bought an oven
Gave my sliding glass dog door insert to somebody on here

The biggest thing for me is the DSLR thread. It pushed me along in my interest in photography.

Not to mention the entertainment once you get through all the BS.

-Sorta kinda met my husband through TWW (technically met him at a TWW party)
-bought a few things off of classifieds
-provided me quite a few laughs (particularly the pwnage of News 14 during the snowstorm)
-helped me become immune to internet smack talk, as well as pretty much any image I can fathom

In addition to many of the community items mentioned already (local news, events, heads-ups, the TWW version of craigslist)

- Through TWW, I became close to a classmate who ultimately was the reason I met my husband
- A good number of friends
- introduction to porn (thanks, playababy)
- introduction to normal nutrition and fitness (That's both very sad, and very telling )
- a least a few jobs/money-making gigs
- information, out the ass
- via #2, my cat
- a thick skin...maybe too thick

I was very much a late bloomer...later than you can possibly imagine. I got on TWW because I had no social life, and was willing to do anything to not be home freshman year when I lived at home. TWW killed many, many hours in the library for me and while I was farting around, I picked up on a good number of things (e.g., #4), and met enough people who tolerated my "eccentricities" that I was able to normalize (I had a highly atypical adolescence and was very removed from everything normal for ~5years) much faster than if I had not gotten on here. It's very sad, but ultimately good, so I don't care And I ended up with a GREAT group of friends. I came to college with no friends: met them all on TWW. It's less the 'sad pathetic nerd' thing, and more of the 'same strange sense of humor' deal. (That, and preferring similar methods of communication...I suck at maintaining friendships with people who only ever want to communicate face-to-face)

Yes, I've thought about these things a fair bit

I think more than anything, the most important two things that are in my life because of TWW are my husband, and an unshakable self-esteem. I'd care so much more what people thought, and be so susceptible to criticism, if TWW weren't such a great source of desensitization

It got katiencbabe to quit venting about stuff all the damn time.*
Got two jobs off of here.
Got laid thanks to advice from here.
Made some real life friends.
Got some cheap stuff that now adorns my home.
Got rid of my goddamn rats through this site.

Probably more.

Oh and Thanks Rush for helping me with my CCP.

Thanks to all my garage guys for all the help and crap you give me.

TWW has allowed me to sell and buy used stuff pretty easily. Granted, I can do that via craigslist now, but I think TWW has less flakey people.

The best thing, for me, is the "TWW Action News". It's interesting to hear firsthand accounts of some newsworthy event.

I've made a few friends too.
