just as criminal as license checkpoints and the like. at least there's the slim chance you might catch a REAL criminal at a license/dui check. are they screening for that at these? or is it strictly run by dmv? 1/4/2010 8:33:04 PM |

That state is billions in debt and this is what they waste their money on. They have billions upon billions in oil and natural gas just sitting there but won't use it. It's beyond me why the federal gov't has bailed them out, again and again.
FUCK THEM
That state's going right down the shitter. Not a chance I'll ever voluntarily move to that liberal paradise.

Seems like a waste of time to me.
Imagine how bad that would suck if you were late for a meeting at work or something and you got stuck there. From reading the other thread it looks like it is "optional" to have your car tested. If that's the case you'd never see them testing my car.

^^well yes, but overall its reduced consumption over driving a car. And if that stuff is so so so horrible and evil he should do his best not to use it, right? 1/5/2010 1:09:28 PM |

California is naturally a pretty nice place so I can understand the concern. Saudi Arabia was earth raped by mother earth herself long before people knew there was any oil there. I say we might as well finish the deal if there is any ecological damage to be done.

Well, California still has some of the worst smog problems. Because of the mountains around LA, the emissions can get trapped there and its an absolute nightmare, like Mexico City. They have had considerable problems with pollution since the 1940s. 1/5/2010 4:31:23 PM |

If the environmentalists didn't organize protests every time a new roadway is proposed there's a good chance they wouldn't have as much traffic, as well as smog. 1/5/2010 8:14:13 PM |

lets think about the resources expended to put on a circus like this. are they offsetting that by the "offenders" they catch? i doubt it. 1/6/2010 12:50:24 AM |

I really wish I would have run into one of these while I was driving through cali in my car last june.
It wouldn't even come close to passing, and probably breaks about 30 CA car restrictions, and I would just wave as I drove through. 1/6/2010 1:08:56 AM |

Wow, that's quite a well thought out reply. Thanks for that!
I do think you're way off base- many people would argue that this isn't a waste. Illegitimate smog shops are pretty prevalent out here, and while I might not agree with all of the legislation surrounding pollution in the state, I do support the enforcement of whatever is ratified. I think that if properly run/regulated (a tall order for California, I know) that it has the potential to general a profit for the state. Worst case, it shuts down a 'dirty' smog shops.
Oil and natural gas reserves in California has absolutely nothing to do with the original topic, so I guess I'll concede by default on that point.
Any former and future federal bailouts of California are a drop in the bucket when compared to wall street or detroit. Couple that with the stat that Cali's GSP is almost 50% larger than 2nd place Texas, I think it's probably a reasonable investment.
I think California is a pretty awesome place. It definitely has its numerous shortcomings, and it is absolutely dreadful to own a gross pollutant car here, but come on... fuck them?1/6/2010 3:17:30 AM |

there's being environmentally conscious and there's just plain stupidity. a clean environment is important, especially clean air. improperly tuned and polluting cars should be taken off the road and/or fixed. it's beyond me that NC doesn't even test pre 1996 vehicles for emissions anymore. but given that state's financial woes (brought on by expensive energy restrictions and entitlement programs) its no mystery why businesses and people are leaving the state. 1/6/2010 11:01:04 AM |

those assholes can't even make payroll, much less do silly shit like that. high taxes and stupid regulations are why there has been a huge flight of businesses and the jobs that go with them out of California. 1/6/2010 5:21:00 PM |
