apple really does price out a lot of people who don't wanna invest thousands of dollars into something they might not like. now that i've had a few and have played around with them, i think i'd buy one - but if i didn't get these guys for free i don't think i would have ever been a potential buyer. that said, i can't see myself ever making the switch totally.

I'm still confused at the part where you said Macs cost thousands of dollars?

Macbook - $999
Mac Mini - $599
Macbook Pro - $1199
iMac - $1199
Macbook Air - $1599

I suppose if you were referring to Mac Pros then yes, they do cost thousands of dollars. These certainly don't sound like crazy crazy prices to me especially when you consider the quality you're getting in both an OS and hardware.

While thousands of dollars may be an overstatement, the fact that the entry level MacBook is $450 more than the entry level Dell of the same size means that people are going to get priced out of owning a Mac.

While this does ignore machine specs, the fact of the matter is that outside of refurbs, you're not getting a Mac laptop from Apple.com for less than a grand. Meanwhile you can walk away from Dell, IBM, etc for significantly less than that. Even if you max the specs, you still come out about $350 ahead with the Dell (since the only hardware changes seem to be a negligibly fast processor increase and a bigger hard drive).

When IBM, Dell, and whoever else starts making quality hardware (aesthetically) thats on par with Apple or better then I'll buy that instead for $350.
