Well the problem is Oscars are only US based flicks I think, that is where I lose interest.
-Inglourious Basterds -Star Trek -Anti Christ -An Education (but i think this is british maybe, and might not make it) -Avatar (maybe, story is still ~meh for me) but this will probably be #1 for a lot of ppl.
those would all be near the top for me.
stuff like 'invictus' i won't even comment on b/c that is like 1/10 for me and i refuse to watch at all costs. but i'm sure it's in the runnings.

Anti Christ was absolute garbage made for the sake of making a fucked up movie, An Education was boring (did you really see that?), Avatar is as deserving as, say, the Star Wars prequels, and the fact that you put Funny People makes me think you're trolling.
And if you haven't seen Invictus, how in the world can you be that down on it?
Mine:
-The Hurt Locker -Moon -The Fantastic Mr. Fox -Invictus -The Road -Up in the Air -The Informant! -Inglorious Basterds -Precious -Up

This year has had some pretty good movies I feel.
District 9 Avatar (technologically speaking that is) Inglorious Basterds Hurt Locker Moon Up Up in the Air Star Trek The Road Brothers Sherlock Holmes I Love You Man The Blind Side The Hangover Monsters vs Aliens Zombieland
etc 1/6/2010 11:40:15 AM |

Precious was real real good but you cant expect wolfwebbers to enjoy black film that isnt comedically exploitative
...and honestly the fact that mo'nique was in it caused me to avoid the movie at all costs, once i watched it i felt like a complete idiot that i had shunned it at all
im not into movies enough to know what is the best of the art, just enjoyed precious (but then agin i just watched its complicated and i really enjoyed that too so take it for what its worth)
I also liked blindside 1/6/2010 12:46:12 PM |

Yeah...when I saw the paper ads for the movie...I wanted to avoid like hell for those two reasons. But then I watched the trailer and it made me want to see it.
Then I watched the movie, and it turned into the best movie I had seen all year. And probably one of the "strongest" movies I had ever seen. Kind of like when I watched Saving Private Ryan in the theaters. I walked out of "Precious" and I was like, "Damn...that's some strong shit."
Don't avoid this movie because of those two actresses. They were actually EXCELLENT in the movie.1/6/2010 3:26:38 PM |

I kinda felt the same way when I first heard about it... then some girls at the place I volunteer for explained what the book was about and I was thinking, "Damn, heavy stuff." I reallyyyyy want to see it.
and my list would be:
Up Inglourious Basterds Paranormal Activity (because it scared the hell out of me) The Hangover Star Trek
I WISH I could put HP6 on my list but I am mad at them for fucking up the movie so bad. >.>

Did you somehow miss that The Queen was nominated for Best Picture too?
Best Picture winners, I'd admit, remain heavily US, but ten of the Best Picture winners have not been from the US at all (and interestingly enough, were all partially UK projects)
if you want to bitch about what they nominate for Best Picture, I'd complain about the lack of non-English language entries chosen instead

Because I like movies that I realize aren't artistically great or even decent? Oscars go to movies that aren't just ones that made you laugh a bunch. They're more about the all-around writing, artistic merits, groundbreaking technical aspects, etc. I laugh a ton at Super Troopers, but get real.1/7/2010 3:16:49 PM |

i personally dont think comedies dont deserve to be nominated for awards other than "best comedy"
i personally dont enjoy them for the most part. I think theyre cheap and easy flicks to make. People laugh at anything really, its not that hard to take advantage of cliche and topical humor.
like the guy above me said i might enjoy a comedy, but it aint no way in hell any comedy ive ever seen in my life deserves any overall award.
Theyre good for gettin people to shell out bucks to see a movie and earn them some pay, and to get people to see advertisements for other movies. 1/7/2010 3:51:20 PM |

never heard of it
cant say
"Dramady" never heard this term before but i know what youre gettign at, Its complicated i guess is like that. I havent seen Juno but from what i hear it was a serious topic with some humor, point is the movies mean something.
those are fine by me, its kinda like Family Guy, which is pointless and slapstick v.s. King of the Hill which has continuity and is funny while also being serious at times

Annie Hall is one of Woody Allen's best film. Brothers may win best adapted screen play, it was a Finnish or Norwegian film first. But Scorsese got his first Oscar from ripping of asian cinema, so it happens. 1/7/2010 8:50:51 PM |

Are you being obtuse on purpose? What the hell do you think people judge movies, a form of art, on if not artistic integrity? Abstract ideas like "likability", for which there can be no standards based on the diversity of individual opinion? At least with a judgement based on artistic integrity, you can set some markers based on performance. This includes many features (acting, design, cinematics, technical design). I'd think that would be pretty evident based on the categories they fucking give the awards for!
What would you pick the Oscars based on?1/8/2010 1:56:09 PM |
