Quote :
"Chicago Bears defensive end Gaines Adams died Sunday morning after he was taken to a Greenwood, S.C., emergency room, the county coroner said.

Greenwood County Coroner James T. Coursey told ESPN that Adams was taken to the emergency room at Self Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 9 a.m. ET Sunday morning.

An autopsy will be performed Sunday by the Anderson County forensic pathologist, Coursey said.

Adams, 26, listed at 6-foot-5 and 256 pounds, played in college at Clemson and was drafted by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2007 NFL draft. He was traded to the Bears in October.

In 47 games over four seasons with the Bucs and Bears, Adams had 67 tackles, including 13.5 sacks."

@Adam_Schefter

Coroner ruled that Bears DE Gaines Adams died of cardiac arrest caused by an enlarged heart. Prayers are with his family and friends.

felt motivated to shoot espn.com an email

500+ comments at the bottom of the article and 50 or so are inhumane, 100% distasteful trolling attempts.

they really shouldn't allow comments at the end of severe injury/death articles. what's the point?

^^^It's America, deal with it.

What happens when a team has one of their starters die??

Do they get a draft pick or something, or are they just shit out of luck?

If i remember right, there are "compensation" picks in the 3rd round and beyond for teams that lose players for various reasons.

seems like enlarged heart is an all too frequent occurrence

are there any tests that can be done to check for that?

thats not a stupid question

thats scary as hell since I assume there is no way of knowing, i was thinking about this yesterday and I really was wondering if there were some way i can be assessed for this

it just amazes me how undetected this can go, considering the amount of doctors collegiate athletes have access to

I don't think the team should get any draft picks for him. He was a huge disappointment in the NFL.

That being said...this sucks and RIP.

i went to HS with an Olympic caliber swimmer who got a full ride to swim for Hawaii, he was a great guy that got along with everyone

2 months after first semester started they found him at the bottom of the training pool, his heart had either just stopped or exploded

^^^fuckin scary stuff, ive been involved in athletic at a high level for years (no doubt not as high as a these professionals in their sports) but it seems liek you cant really know if it is disease related or normal workout size increase unless ou stop trainign for a while and determine whether your heart shrinks

it doesnt even seem like a matter of how healthy our lfestyle is or how little drugs you take, its hereditary. But who is to say that this condition hasnt come up in your family and either wasnt found as a cause of death, or the enlarged heart never killed a family member because perhaps they werent athletic nor involved in any strenuous activity for very long if at all.

I reckon Id visit a cardiologist, i wonder what kind of tests theyd do
