The Hold Steady >>>>>>>>> Drive-By Truckers on the "Rock and Roll Means Well" Tour in November of 2008. It was technically a co-headlining tour where they switched headlining duties for each city they played, but when they played in Raleigh, they came to Lincoln Theatre, and the Hold Steady went first. Their show was one of the best I've ever been to, easily. The Truckers were drunk as fuck and mediocre at best, and I didn't stay for the whole thing. 1/19/2010 12:43:30 PM |

yeah, at the Norva in Norfolk. the little kids were booing KOLS but started waist-high moshing as soon as STD came out. the lead singer's face was covered in acne to relate to his target audience.

I've been to a lot of shows that I only went to for the opening acts, but a few times I was unexpectedly blown away by openers.
Rocky Votolato and Minus the Bear >>> New Amsterdams and Jesse Malin Dillinger Escape Plan >>> whatever whack metal band they opened for Annuals >>> Minus the Bear last time I saw them Bon Iver >>> Wilco Rise Against and Against Me! >>> Antiflag David Bazan >>> Ben Gibbard
These are the one that immediately come to mind. I'm sure there are more. 1/20/2010 6:42:16 PM |

You could not be more right here. Out of all the concerts I have ever seen, this was one of the dumbest moves by a band ever. You have as an opening band a group that you yourself are emulating and they do it infinitely better than you. Really made Blink look stupid(er than normal).
Others: Black Crowes > ZZ Top (Chapel Hill 90) KISS >>>>>>>>>>>>> Aerosmith (Creek 05? Again, regardless whether you like KISS's music, you can't deny their stage show.) Phish > Santana (92)1/20/2010 10:52:13 PM |

hah. that band slept in our living room one time when they were playing at ?lincoln theater?/?ritz?. they gave us cd's in exchange

i was at that show and couldn't disagree more. bon iver wasn't suited for that crowd or venue. and wilco brought it as usual.

I was there, too, and this is absolutely true--never follow KISS. And I think it was '03.
I remember that Aerosmith played "Baby, Please Don't Go" for what seemed like 15 minutes, and when the song was finally over, some drunk guy yelled over a smattering of applause, "That was fuckin' weak!"
Aerosmith has a large catalog of hit songs. People just wanted to hear them.1/21/2010 2:08:19 PM |
