if u really suck and/or are rude, ill only tip 10-15%, but if you're average-awesome, ill tip 25-50%. i feel that if youre too broke to tip someone the normal percentage, then you shouldnt go out to eat. these waiters/waitresses rely solely on tips and its annoying busting your ass for next to nothing because people decide to be cheap-asses.

Also read: If I've ever worked for tips, I'll hook you up for average service and I'll leave at least 15% for crappy service.

I've found that you can't get away with intentional spelling errors on here as much as you could on less "educated" boards (i.e. non college boards)

I never get away with any of mine, when I'm just trying to be funny

i mean i didnt make this thread to bitch about bad tippers, for every handful of shitty tippers there's someone that tips so generously that it all evens out

i'll be the first to admit that I make more money than I probably should as a bartender

all the same, the way one tips is an interesting reflection of his or her character and people never cease to amaze me

i used to not tip that good for like the first couple months when i started going to bars and then i realized i wasn't that good of a tipper and that i could be more good so i started tipping more good and i wasnt great because i was still in college and couldnt afford to just throw money at every bartender but i became more good

I accept reflection of character to an extent, but based on an individuals salary, can a 15-20% appear to be both modest and extravagant depending on one's earnings? And can it be said that you can not ascertain their true intent on such a tip without knowing how much they make for a living?

Well if you go by %, that's like 60% tip. I'd be fine with that. I gauge how much I tip between amount of work the person actually did for me and how big my bill is, almost never tipping less than 20%. As long as the place isn't packed out and you're taking up space, they're not really losing out on money. Any time they don't spend refilling your water/taking your order/bringing you your 10 wings is time they can spend on another customer. I don't have a problem paying $4 total on a bill of $2.50.

I've also tipped the waitress like $5 when I won a free $20 tab playing poker before though, so it also depends on the situation. Bottom line is, lots of people working for tips are trying to live off of that money, so there's really no reason to be a douche bag about it.

That goes back to why you're going out if you can't really afford to go out. If you can't afford to pay someone $2-$3 extra for the service they're providing then your character as a person is called into question because you're probably a dumbfuck for going out when that amount of money can make or break you. Basically, if you can afford to go out, you should tip a minimum amount for fair service. If you can really afford to go out, it's nice but not necessary to tip even more. I know if I was pulling in a hefty salary I'd be leaving at least like 50% tips on everything for average service. You can really make someone's day by showing them their hard work has been appreciated.

well, I think it's bullshit. she knows we're going to be there having a couple of beers so it's perfectly ok for her to show up and spend four bucks. would she try to spend four bucks if we weren't there? we're subsidizing her wing special night.

If I go to a bar and get 10 $2 bottles of beer and all the bartender had to do was hand me 2 bottles each time, it is highly unlikely that I'm going to tip more than $3-4 unless the bartender is particularly accommodating.

at the end of the day the cost of going out is whatever the price is plus tip. it's designed that way. if EVERYONE skimped on tips the price of the food/drinks would go up in order for the business to survive.

I do feel that people who make a shit ton of money should tip more simply because they recognize that they live in a society that allows them to be comfortably wealthy compared to 90% of americans and 99% of the world.

I fail to see the issue here. How is her wing-eating being subsidized?

^^anyone who goes to a bar BY THEMSELF that has 25 cent wing night and only orders wings and nothing else is a horrible person

that we were there at the table and ordering something other than the cheap wings made it ok for her to bogart off our presence. we were subsidizing the cost of being served at a restaurant.

Without that special going on though, there would be less customers and the person serving you would already be making less money. No one is being harmed by her taking advantage of a promotional offer.

ok. it's just really cheap then. I think the bar would STOP the special if everyone just came in and ordered wings and nothign else on wing night, don't you?

I could argue tipping practice all night long, but I came in here to say this as an absolute:

$3 on $20 is not a good tip.

thank you, and I respectfully take my leave.
