Let me start out by saying that I'm one of those die-hard fans that has too much State paraphernalia and knows way too much about the history of our athletics. I do yell at games, but I don't make an ass out of myself. I just want to say that I am tired of waiting for us to put out a winner. I'm tired of the excuses. I understand the whole "let the coaches have enough time to build their program", but dammit how long do I have to wait?

GT hires Paul Johnson and what does he do in his first two years? Only win 9 games in his first year and win the ACC in his second. Now obviously GT was a solid program for a number of years as evident by their string of bowl appearances, but for a long time they weren't a program that was considered elite. Hell from 2002-2007 only once did they not finish with only 7 wins, which was the 2006 season where they won the Atlantic division in one of the weakest ACC seasons ever. Then you have Virginia, who has way less basketball history and passion than us, go off and hire Tony Bennett and they're tied for fucking first in the ACC right now after finishing 11th last year. It's not like they added a great recruiting class either. Hell even Dave Leitao, as much of a fuck-up that guy was, was able to take UVA to a first place finish in the regular season a couple of years ago.

Hell even when we were good (see the Rivers and latter half of the Sendek years) we weren't anything special. We never won the conference with Rivers and lost 4 straight to Maryland, despite how great he was. And with Sendek, with the exception of one year, we always barely snuck into the tournament and were guaranteed an early exit from the tournament, with Hodge's heroics in 05 being the lone exception. Seriously when are we going to be relevant? When is the massive amount of donations and facility upgrades gonna pay off? We've invested more than our fair share of money, tears, sweat, and blood (I've yelled so hard at games that I was coughing up blood afterwards) into this athletic department to not have it finally pay off.

Now I'm going to give Lowe and O'Brien the time that I think that they deserve, but the saddest thing is that if they fail and we end up having to get rid of them I have no confidence in our AD to be able to lure the right hire that will turn it around. The cycle will continue and we will be doomed to a life of not even being mediocre. What's sad is that we don't have any other sports to hang our hat on like UVA and some of the other schools have. We suck at everything. It hurts me to admit that our athletic department is the laughingstock of the ACC right now.

We must fire Fowler before we do anything. I truly believe that this atmosphere in our athletic department of accepting mediocrity is because of him. We need a change that will hopefully come with the new chancellor's hiring. Everyone on here wants to act like people around the country don't know anything about NC State and this is just not true. I've traveled a lot and live in Philadelphia now. When I tell people that I went to NC State, they know what school I'm talking about. They know we are located in Raleigh. They know we are the Wolfpack. They know we are in the ACC. There is no excuse for our ineptitude. We have the nicest basketball arena in the ACC and it is one of the nicest in the country. Our basketball practice facility is one of the nicest in the country. We can and should be better.

Well I've obviously been through #1 seeing as how I graduated from State in December 2006. I've experienced #2, #3, #4, and #5 too many times, one time all within the same day (BC basketball game at the end of Sendek's final year). The 2006 football season had a lot of #6 about two games after the FSU game. Hopefully #7 will stay away for awhile b/c that means 1) I won't be living the bachelor lifestyle anymore and 2) I'll be middle-aged.

Okay. Went to the ODU v W&M game last night. Aside from the game which was one sided (ODU won easily, they are decent, might make the dance) I was overall impressed with the atmosphere. This probably was greatly intensified because I could drink free keg beer before the game and during half-time in the Big Blue Room with ODU allumnus. But the fans were really into it and they had some good cheers. Although there ice cream dance was probably one of the gayest things I have ever seen, but THEY ALL PARTICIPATED. Even the old ass lady that sat in front of me and had that old person smell. At the end of the game they did this scoreboard chant which I have never heard before that was funny as hell because they all pointed at the loosing fans.

I think that our atmosphere at NC State will get better as a whole once we start winning games. That always helps. This year for our basketball team we can only rely on our NBA 1-on-1 offense with average at best athletes (Scott Wood being maybe the only basketball player). If we can win the 1-on-1 matchups we win. Example being Javi doing AND 1 BS and hitting a three that he should have never taken but it went in against DUKE.......i just re-read this and it is a bunch of bs. I don't care though because our team is bs and doesn't care. They are lost.

well, we all feel your pain, although i'm surpised that i have never yelled so hard at games that I was coughing up blood afterwards...that's pretty intense.

after the UNC game when i smashed glasses, remote controls and a lamp in front of my new (now ex) gf, I decided that I would take preventative measures in subsequent games to avoid more property damage.

so last night i bubble wrapped my hands and wore oven mits for 2 hours.

If that's true - and I'm not questioning that it is - then you have to take a look at Clemson's state, too.

So what does that inspire you to deduce? That pouring money into a program doesn't really mean shit. There's other problems here, and they stem from an institutional apathy that goes all the way up the line of administrators.

^x4 It was the FSU game my freshman year in 2002. I hadn't exactly built up my vocal cords to where they were by the time my sophomore year had rolled around. I'm generally a quiet guy, but can yell pretty loud at games. I was hoarse for well over a week from what I remember.

As a fan on a messageboard, you don't have enough timely information to determine whether a coach genuinely needs more time or whether he is plateauing. By the time it is obvious to fans, the evidence usually has to slap you in the face and a long time goes by.

It's like the stock market -- insiders have the best information and can react the quickest. By the time the information hits the public, there is not much you can do based on that.

This is why the fandom relies on management to have the skills to collect, digest, and make decisions based on the special access they have to the internal workings of the programs. An AD is a boss just like any boss in any company -- they monitor, evaluate, DEVELOP, and remove obstacles for the coaches. The required skills really are no different that any other management job.

Fans cannot micromanage an athletics program from the internet -- they just have to trust that the right people are in place in the athletics programs. That's how management works. You have to trust the skill and talent of the people you have and allow them to go to work.

Oh and maybe the students should organize a rally at the new chancellor's house and voice their opinion on Fowler and that he should be fired. At least he'd be aware that the majority of us don't like him and that perhaps there is a good reason.

Well I don't want to say that we should've hired Paul Johnson instead of Tom O'Brien. In the way the GT team was set up, with those undersized yet mobile linemen, was a perfect situation for PJ to come in and be successful from the get go. I don't know if he would have had the same success here. I was more ranting that we are told to wait yet for the past twenty or so years that's all we've been doing. The waiting needs to end and results better start happening in the near future. I'm not even saying conference championships next year. Next year all I want is a bowl and a winning record in the conference next year, and for basketball I just want to get to the NCAA tournament. Then I just want us to continue elevating the two programs by getting better each year. As good as Harrow, Brown, and Cothron will be, I know they aren't going to be the type of class that Kentucky got this past year where boom we're the best team in the league and a contender for the national championship.

Dear students, will you please for the love of god start a "FIRE FOWLER" chant at the next basketball game. I can't stand this anymore, and the chancellor needs to hear the fans displeasure for how our athletics department is being ran. I was disappointed in the loss last night, but what's inexcusable is that I heard that the dance team couldn't even get the sound guys to play the right song for them and had to perform an old routine as a result. I mean seriously how incompetent are the people in our athletics department that they can't even choreograph the timeout entertainment correctly? This is just further proof of the incompetence that is NC State athletics.

I think I have just really given up at this point. I went to the UNC game with my brother (a UNC fan) and two of his friends. At the end of the game, I went back to the truck didn't say a word and just drank the rest of my beers. I have not even cussed at the TV the last couple games, I'm not even sure I've raised my voice (even when Degand got tackled at the half). Its the same thing every game. Tracy Smith is the only offense, we don't have the guards to dribble penetrate and get him the ball our perimeter shooting sucks ass so they can just double team him all game long with nothing to fear. Our defense sucks. End of story.
