More polygons. Yea, that's definitely the solution.

How can they get these kind of graphics out of the X-box and still be that far beyond halo 3?

whatever new shit they're using it doesn't load the entire map in full detail at once. It loads things in more detail when they're close and has them less detailed from afar. doing that allowed them to get things in ridiculous detail without compromising performance.

^they've been doing that shit for at least a decade in various games.

This reminds me of something someone said in an Avatar thread and my response:

Quote :
"^from reviews i heard its like comparing a mazda miata to a chrysler crossfire
in other words 3-d is childs play compared to this
this will make you really thing you are there
the technology uses 2 cameras and filetering glasses, which filter different part of the image through to your left and right eye
so you see just like in real life

umm... sounds like you've just described the 115 year old process of creating 3D films"

Arena System Explained: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/62873
Matchmaking Changes: http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/62865

love these new tidbits.. the UI looks great (IMO) and I'm really looking forward to the new additions to matchmaking, especially the Queue-joining, assuming they get it all implemented correctly.

Halo 2's live support is being dropped after tonight. :'( Logged a whole lot of hours playing that game online. Anyway, if you play tonight (I know this is way late) there are prizes to be won, and "Halo: Reach flair".

MW2 ripoff anyone? and the arena system in a clear cut product of blizzard. at this point i feel that WoW is a bastard of a game, but blizz puts quite a bit of hard work into the arena system.

don't get me wrong, though. i'm all for a game that takes all the best parts from other multilayer systems and combines them into one sexy beast...

Looks like it might end up being very good.

I've got a lot of reservations, though, since:

1) They're marketing the single-player story in a Halo game... The book was pretty good, but as a Halo game, anything single-player is basically pointless. Unless, of course, they manage to make a harder difficulty in Reach that is actually legitimately challenging.
--Either way, this means that they're targeting (among other things) the group of Halo fans who are very bad at multiplayer... and catering to shitty people is one of many aspects that made H3's multiplayer terrible. It's not so much a bad mark against Reach as it is just a bad omen.

2) Basically everything Bungie has done right (Halo 1, Halo 2's multiplayer) has been almost entirely on accident. The time they finally managed to make a game that was technically sound/not full of bugs, they made the consistent/consistently-bad Halo 3. Better to have a game which tries to be great but has flaws and inconsistencies (H2) than make a game which succeeds at being mediocre (H3).
--Though I will say that Firefight mode in ODST ended up actually being good, on purpose.

3) Bungie has absolutely no idea how to make a good competitive multiplayer map. They've gotten lucky a few times (Midship, Sanctuary, Construct, a couple others), but the vast majority of maps in H2 and H3 have just been completely unplayable. Hell, if they'd just grasp the basic concept of "mostly symmetrical = generally good" they could do very well.

...I wish I didn't know so much about Halo, but a lot of the people I know (used to) play it all the damn time. It's hard not to involve oneself somehow.

What gives you that impression? Of course the first trailer for the game relates to single player, but over the past 2 months they've been hyping up the multiplayer beta...

I'm going to have to disagree with you there. I think Bungie makes better maps than any other developer. The "vast majority" of maps in this series are actually well-balanced and perfect for competitive play. If every map was symmetrical we wouldn't get great ones like Zanzibar, High Ground, and Lockout.

Construct isn't the worst map in the series, but I certainly wouldn't place it anywhere near Midship and Sanctuary.

Are you sure he didn't mean to say Citadel or Colossus? Those are both very good symmetrical maps. (Construct is mostly symmetrical, but not completely.)

Turf, Ascension, Ivory Tower, Ghost Town, and Chill Out/Cold Storage are all great asymmetrical competitve maps.

FWIW, the campaigns in 1-3 were all very enjoyable.

Lockout was awesome. Midship was too. Vahalla is awesome. Avalanche is fun (mostly because of the vehicles). Construct is pretty awesome (great BR map). Narrows is pretty average (awesome 2v2 map, but anything more and it's too much grenade spamming). Guardian is also pretty average. The thing with the giant wheel is fun for one bomb/one flag types, and is a decent BR map.

Sandtrap can be okay. Big team heavy and it's good. any other mode and it fucking sucks. Sandtarp is the worst map ever. Snowbound is ridiculously shitty. I hate ghost town for anything but sniping.

I'm pretty pro. Legendary isn't that bad except for a few parts by yourself if you know what you're doing, what's coming, and what weapons to use when. sure you might die a couple times, but it's not that bad.

I loved legendary in H1, it felt like it was exactly what Legendary should be. H2 legendary was appropriately hard for the most part, too.

H3 legendary was a breeze up until the last non-driving level (...whenever you have to climb the big multi-tiered tower covered in flood, is what I'm talking about)... you couldn't get by just by rushing through and being stupid/reckless, obviously, but if you generally knew what you were doing it didn't really present too many challenges. Like ^ said, sure you might die a couple times, but there aren't really any major hurdles except for that last flood level.
