This being TWW, I'm not expecting much more than the usual idiocy, BUT:
I'm looking into getting a dedicated box soon. I'm wondering if there is any interest in sharing the usage and payment on a box. Split between 2-4 people to cut down costs while still having the benefits of a dedi.
Just putting some feelers out right now; looking to get a box in the next few months. 2/14/2010 12:29:30 PM |

might have more interest if you mention how much of it space/bandwidth wise you will be using/needing 2/14/2010 12:37:24 PM |

I don't know exactly what I'm going to be getting into. My usage wouldn't be consistent in terms of bandwidth.
Spec wise I'd be looking at a box with at least:
160HDD 2-4 RAM 2000GB monthly transfer
I'd be using 1 or 2 gigs of space for file storage/website application, with next to no bandwidth usage. On occasion I would launch a Source engine server, ventrilo, shoutcast, etc for light usage. I would assume 300-400GB a month at MOST transfer wise. Usually substantially less.
Basically I would be using a quarter or less of the system resources at any given time; leaving plenty of resources for other "investors." 2/14/2010 12:47:11 PM |

why not just get a vps? then you dont have the headaches of dealing with other tenants with root access on your box. 2/15/2010 12:22:03 PM |

VPS's are fine for hosting applications. Doing other things (ie: game server, voip, etc) generally requires a bit more resources than most standard VPS plans. Sure you can pay more for a better VPS, but by that time you're getting into dedicated pricing anyway.
Also, for this kind of thing I'd rather be able to talk directly with the other people using the box than having to go through a proxy if someone is negatively impacting service on another slice of the VPS. 2/15/2010 2:18:14 PM |

this has failure written all over it... you need to just get past the face that you need bandwidth and its costly for anything worthwhile.
my recommendation is buy a box thats capable of running 3-4 VM's (16gb+ ram) and splitting the BW charges to them. If I had enough upload I would try this, but only locally with people that I could physically meet in person. at least this way each person on the box is restricted to their on VM and could each have a root atmosphere...

1. Don't post up some "usual idiocy" nonsense and expect any response other than getting called a dicksuck. Insulting the people you want advice from is fucking stupid.
2. If you're calling it a "box," you probably don't need it. 2/16/2010 11:36:18 AM |

My apologies sir. I should have waited for people to post non-constructive and idiotic things before calling them on it; you're absolutely right.
Furthermore, I shall refrain from ever calling a server a "box" again. I did not realize that fairly common slang was inappropriate on the Internets. 2/16/2010 1:11:38 PM |

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't one of the "benefits of a dedi" not splitting the resources of your server with other people?

How low of a cost are you trying to get here? I mean, if you're trying to get to the $20-40 range while still having a dedicated computer, you should just get yourself a business level highspeed connection to your home and run your sever locally. You could get a business connection as high as $80 / month and probably still save money since presumably you're already paying for home access.
Beyond that, you can buy your own computer and co-locate for $60 / month, and from there, dedicated servers start in the $80 range.

hmmm I want to have the low costs of a VPS but none of the performance problems!! Surely I can do this by turning a dedicated server into a VPS!! 2/16/2010 1:50:12 PM |

Do some research on the cost/benefit ratio of alternatives vs my idea. I appreciate your suggestions about colo and business lines, which I have looked into. They don't work out as well as a dedi split between 3 or 4 people (for this situation anyway). It will work just fine with the right people involved, but they aren't here.
I'll keep looking, but I think I've got my answer 3 or 4 times over here.

It would appear people have done the cost/benefit analysis and are coming up with your idea sucking. Seriously, it sounds like all you want is a light gaming server. Those solutions are easily available to you at prices below the cost of getting a dedicated server. And if you really want to own your own hardware, you can still do it cheaper. But you seem to think that you have some massive power requirements that will require a real dedicated server, but at the same time that you won't be using more than 25% of that power, and by your own words, usually much less. These are highly contradictory statements. So instead of playing coy, why don't you reveal your master plan and explain why you have such awesome computing needs that a VPS, rented gaming server or a self/hosted colo server will not fit the bill, but a dedicated server with 2-4 other "investors" will. 2/16/2010 3:51:25 PM |
