My favorite Eagles moment is Teenage Jail into The Greeks Don't Want No Freaks because of how badass TJ is and how cheesy TGDWN is starting off.

holy fuck do not talk about the eagles in this thread

this thread is about GOOD bands

debate the fact that there is a "ccr sound" if you must

but leave the eagles out of this

Eagles are a good band. "Take It Easy" is great.

I would say they fit this better than AC/DC does.

there does need to be some sort of stipulation, i suppose, because every band has a few oddballs

so let's say any band where 85% of the songs sound the same but a vast majority of those songs are quality

i think the beach boys are all over the map (from smile to wild honey to sunflower in three years, for instance), but they move in phases and unless you're down deep in the catalog it's hard to know that

i'm having a hard time thinking of an ac/dc song that doesn't involve a straight beat, a big vocal, and a huge malcolm riff

I don't get why Fleetwood Mac has a reputation of cool, but Eagles don't. They're very similar. A lot of ups and downs, turned out some great country-rock songs at their peak(s) at a time when country-rock songs were king, but since then have also turned some pretty cheesy shit.

Fleetwood Mac made two damn fine rock records with a hell of lot of emotion spilled all over them.

The Eagles only made one, even that one is arguable, and it's pretty devoid of anything serious.

Plus, Fleetwood Mac were three douchebags and two girls, whereas the Eagles were four douchebags and Joe Walsh.

I am deep in the Beach Boys' catalog. I will give you the "phases" argument, but I don't think those phases differ vastly from the previous phase. For instance, all they really added from their earliest "surfing and girls and cars" era to the Pet Sounds and Smile era was orchestration (and Brian Wilson's songwriting got better). If you strip the songs of their orchestral elements (although I realize this is heresy, and would never allow it to be done), you can see that the songs are still all about one thing-vocal harmonization. In this respect (the same formula you apparently applied to AC/DC), I see their songs as similar. However, I will cede that when I named the Beach Boys, I was thinking more pre-Pet Sounds.

Girls can be douchebags, too, and I'm not sure that Stevie Nicks isn't one. So, that's four douchebags and a girl VS. four douchebags and Joe Walsh. Who wins out between Joe Walsh and a girl? I don't know.

I don't really know about who in Eagles are douchebags and who in Fleetwood Mac are douchebags; I just know that they've had similar music, similar career arcs, and similar success. As far as emotion goes, I think you can find emotion or earnestness in their earlier records. Just as much as you would find in a Fleetwood Mac record. And, even if we were to allow the goofy/serious argument to stand--is emotional art always better than goofy art? Absolutely not. I don't think there's anything wrong with a song being goofy. If we didn't respect goofy music, the Beatles would not be the Beatles. It's as simple as that.

I'm fine with goofy, but a lot of Eagles songs are neither serious nor fun to me, they're just there.

^^ The only Eagles record I can really stand to listen to if forced is the first one, though I have to give some credit to One of These Nights for giving us the H2G2 theme. That's a personal preference, however. Hotel California is the only Eagles record that's ever really been given status as a "great record".

Here's a line from another good Eagles tune, "Already Gone":

Quote :
"So often times it happens that we live our lives in chains
And we never even know we have the key""

May not be literary brilliance, but I think they suggest that Eagles weren't a band that a serious music fan can casually dismiss as bad. And aside from the lyrics of their songs, which I am not arguing are great, they had strong, catchy melodies and solid country-rock arrangements (again, much like Fleetwood Mac). From what I can see, they've had a pretty sizable influence on artists like Drive-By Truckers and Ryan Adams (most notably Don Henley's voice).

Kings of Leon - I swear I cant tell the difference between any of their songs when they come on the radio, I think they just rehash the same lyrics and throw a new chorus in the middle somewhere

I like AC/DC, I just agree that the majority of their songs sound exactly the same

and I call bs on 311's songs sounding the same. they are arguably one of the more diverse bands out, on any given record you can find a mix of reggae, rock, and rap-type songs

I would say 311, Muse and Red Hot Chili Peppers are three of the most diverse groups musically out right now. Flame me if you want
