Well, that's good. I'm glad that both parties are working hard to fuck over this country once and for all. I'm confident that with some luck and a little bipartisanship, we can be a third world country by 2020. 3/2/2010 5:25:59 PM |

Quote : | "Besides the day to day administrative aspects of running a country, the President has already signed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, he signed a bill to expand veteran benefits, he signed kids tobacco legislation, he signed a major land protection act, & SCHIP, gave the Cairo speech & followed it up with appointing special envoys, the first time home buyers credit has seemed pretty popular, he gave a widely watched education speech & is making education a bigger priority recently, he's advocated for science in our schools, & is for stem cell research, he's appointed a supreme court justice, he's ordered a return to the army field manual to prevent torture, respects the Geneva Convention, and has plans to close Gitmo, he's working to end DADT which is polling very well right now even in NC, he's going to have us out or Iraq next year and starting to pulling out of Afghanistan (the one that actually attacked us) at the same time (using deadlines, something fiercely opposed by the previous administrations supporters), and he's changed the rules so that every visitor who enters the white house is made public to make no wiggle room for defining lobbyists, and there's the jobs bill, and a move towards more public debates like prime minister's (or in his case President's) Question Time which he did with the GOP and with the dems, and has asked to do it again." |
I guess you took it from that post of mine in another thread, but you're right, the country's government is running a little better than one could tell at a cursory glance at the media.
For matter, cursory glances at the media often don't tell the whole story; with such a glance at the media one probably also wouldn't realize, while not all retirements are created equally, more republicans are retiring than democrats at every level of the House, Senate, and for governorships.
For all the hype, like we're on our way to becoming a third world country, or the president is a communist, it really is not that bad. Throw in 1 reconciliation procedure threat for every 100 filibuster procedure threats and the wheels keep turning.3/2/2010 5:35:56 PM |

83%, that is just sad.
Now that I think about it, how does that make sense. If his approval has fallen 4 points from dems, 2 from ind, and 3 from repubs.. how has he fallen 15-20% total? 3/2/2010 5:54:42 PM |

Republicans work with democrats to pass a tourism bill to increase travel industry to US attractions:

How exactly is this thread defining "bipartisan?"
Here's the voting history for the first act on your list:
Quote : | "The bill was re-introduced in the 111th Congress (as H.R. 11 and S. 181) in January 2009. It passed in the House of Representatives with 247 votes in support and 171 against.[9] The vote was nearly perfectly split along party lines, with only three Republicans voting in favor (Ed Whitfield of Kentucky, Don Young of Alaska and Chris Smith of New Jersey) and two Democrats voting nay (Travis Childers of Mississippi and Parker Griffith of Alabama). The Senate voted 72 to 23 to invoke cloture on S. 181 on January 15, 2009.[10] (The vote to invoke cloture ends debate on a bill, and usually leads to a final vote within a few days.) The Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act passed the Senate, 61-36, on January 22, 2009. The votes in favor included every Democratic senator (except Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts, who was absent from the vote because of health issues) and five Republican senators.[11]" |
Hardly what I'd classify as "Republicans working with Dems"3/5/2010 11:30:54 AM |

Because that's how the president himself has defined bipartisanship - if he can peel off one or two rino votes, its bipartisan!3/5/2010 2:18:41 PM |

Hell, the president will call a bill bipartisan, even when ZERO republicans support it
Also,
Quote : | "The Senate voted 72 to 23 " |
Which means close to 20 republican senators voted FOR this bill... It was bipartisan bitch. Get over it.
The republicans are not obstructionists.

"Now that the entire premise of my thread has been shown to be false, let's criticize Obama for things he hasn't done yet!"

Are you really going to argue this? I think most of the GOP has become somewhat proud of their obstructionist mantle.

Who's criticizing Obama?
This thread is all about praising the cooperative republicans who are working with the democrats to pass important legislation. Your own quote backs this up:
Quote : | "The Senate voted 72 to 23 to invoke cloture on S. 181 on January 15, 2009" |

72 to 23... to invoke cloture. The final vote was 61-36, with 59 of the 61 being Democrats. 3/5/2010 2:28:27 PM |

Isn't it nice how the GOP, even if they might disagree with legislation, still allow it to come to the floor for a vote.
It really goes to show that they are not just being capricious obstructionists and highlights the fact that when they DO filibuster a bill, its because of legitimate concerns and not out of a desire to simply make the president look bad.

Quote : | "It’s pretty clear, however, that McConnell isn’t terribly interested in seeing Democrats succeed. An Associated Press analysis published this week shows that McConnell has used the Senate’s cloture rules as a tool to block the Democratic majority more frequently and on a wider array of issues than any of his predecessors in the 200-plus year history of the Senate.
In 2009, the first term of the 111th Congress, Senate Republicans demanded cloture votes an astonishing 112 times, more than double the number of 60-vote motions filed in 1995-96, when Republicans controlled the Senate. This year, McConnell and Co. have pushed cloture votes on 30 measures, well ahead of last year’s record." |

If you're arguing that the GOP aren't currently obstructionists, then you're arguing that there's never been obstructionism in the Senate.

Well, that could just as easily be interpreted as the republicans were much more willing to work with dems when the gop controlled the senate.

Obstructionism is obstructionism, regardless of motivation.
Clearly they think their obstructionism is justified.

If republicans honestly believe they could run the country if they were in power again, then they could be doing it both on principle and to make the president look bad, since they that believe will help them get into power again. And since when didn't a politician think they would do better than the other guys? 3/5/2010 4:15:35 PM |

Yeah sure buddy, let's commend republicans for not obstructing absolutely everything.
Further, let's stop calling them obstructionists because of that. That's not fair!
They have only doubled the number of filibusters used in any previous congress. I'm sure they had good reason for doing so.
I guess you can feel good knowing the GOP isn't completely full of blind partisans who are aligned against Obama and "the socialists." 3/5/2010 4:51:29 PM |

I'm sorry you embarrassed yourself in this thread, but that President Obama is hovering around 50% overall hasn't changed. You realize the poll you posted to make fun in another thread is the virtually the same as the poll I posted here, just not divided up by group.3/14/2010 10:58:51 PM |
