I'm making my wishlist for next semester, but I can't seem to find any info on this class (Fundamentals of Environmental Engineering). It looks like it's going to be taught by Aziz/DeCarolis next semester, and I can't find any information on those teachers either. Has anyone taken this class in the past or had these teachers and can comment on the workload and the subject matter? Any info would be appreciated, thanks!

those two don't sound familiar at all...

I had the course with Ducoste. It was tough and required diligence/effort/time. However, I did end up with an A+ in the course. The material itself isn't all that rough; pretty basic actually and quite broad, so it's a good class to be introduced to the CCEE side of Environmental Engineering (WTPs, WWTPs, air quality). What made it tough was a lack of coverage on mathematical concepts/equations and difficult tests.

aziz is newly a teaching faculty, formerly a phd student here (and a really nice guy). decarolis is a relatively new faculty member who does energy modeling type stuff.

just going off of what i know about them, i'd guess that decarolis' section will be more policy oriented. i've never taken a course from either of them, so i can't really say.

I took it, but don't remember the persons name. It was a guy with a European accent. He was fine, I just had a hard time paying attention in class (even though it was a small class). It was my worst grade in all 4 years at state, but I still say it was one of the most valuable classes I took, despite the terrible grade. I remember this prof. didn't give any opportunities to improve my struggling grade. Also didn't move the grade up a fraction of a point for me, despite my improvement throughout the class.

A lot of other people within the class did fine and loved it, just didn't work for me.

I took it with Dr. Knappe. I don't know if he is there or not. Pretty interesting class if you like modeling the flow of groundwater plumes, etc. The topics related to contaminated well water were also interesting. The first half of the class focused on risk analysis/probability. Overall it was OK, don;t know about those teachers. Coming from a structures guy, I don't think you can go "wrong" with the class. I'd just stay away from the hydrology classes.

yeah construction really, because all you civil people design shit and don't think about how it will go together. Plus we take just as many engineering courses as you all do... so don't knock construction

I took it with Knappe a couple years ago. Interesting class, decent amount of chemistry though if you aren't too keen on that.

had aziz for the hydaulics lab. he was great. i learned more in that lab than i did in the lecture. hes a young guy with a lot of potential to be a great prof.

yeah starting last semester they changed a lot of the coursework, its even more of a shallow look across the spectrum of env eng, I had DeCarolis and Knappe last semester and they took out most of the tough chemistry, only left the quantitative easy stuff. They took turns teaching lectures that were in subjects they were familiar with, mostly DeCarolis for the first half and Knappe for the second. It's definitely easier than it used to be, and they dropped the extra chem prerequisites
