Anyone watching this tonight? Don't know what it comes on in the US but i'm over in Edinburgh and planning on watching it live.

I don't know how i feel about Matt Smith, the new doctor who. Mainly because i liked David Tennant so much. He's kind of young in relation to all the other doctors. I'm sure i won't be disappointed though. This show has been pretty solid the last few seasons.

It starts mid-April for the US on the Beeb America. Are they advertising it like mad there?

The writing is what will keep people coming back, although the loss of Tennant will take a while to get over. I have reservations too about this new doctor, but for the brief scene he was in at the end of last season, he wasn't to bad. He seems to have the mannerisms and verbalization of the Doctor's stream of consciousness down. I'll probably catch it streaming online somewhere.

I like the new Doctor, doesn't seem like he'll replace Tennant, but still he's pretty good.

Watched it yesterday, posting finally. Is it just my imagination, or is the CGI at a whole new level? That was the smoothest I've ever seen on tv.

I still think Matt Smith is doing a pretty good job considering he's playing such a legendary character. I'm glad to see the writing is still really good.

On a side note, I just now stumbled onto the fan made Doctor Who meets Star Trek eps a few days ago. It's pretty cool and well made considering it's done by an amateur. For those who haven't seen it, it's broken up into three parts on Youtube or you can see it in its entirety here:

Smith seems fine as the Doctor. His Doctor is a bit temperamental, but that's not really Smith's doing as much as it is Moffat's.

But I like'm, even when he's grouchy and spastic. Actually those seem to be two of his finer qualities thusfar.

I'm diggin' it. I might love Amy even more than The Doctor, which is saying a lot, because I really like Matt Smith's interpretation. Oh, Moffat's reign will be sweet. Neil Gaiman's writing an episode for next season!

Oh yes, I totally have one on my desk at work.

Oh I like the stories so far. I was just commenting on the new flashes of, I guess you'd call it, anger. I hope they don't fall into some of the character development traps that befell the Colin Baker interpretation of the Doctor.

*Spoilers of course*

Watched the third now, the Spitfire scene is easily one of the most ridiculous in the New Series of Doctor Who.

Also, I was really hoping for a general return to the Imperial Dalek (white with metal/black accents) look. I guess we've kinda got there now but the new ones also look even more like upside down trash cans than they did before.

Still, I think it's nice that they'll be back again. I've gotten seriously tired of destroying the Daleks once and for all every single time we see them. Daleks as an enemy that can actually win or even just get away helps restore a touch of their menace.

^^ exactly. I mean, I know that a lot of that character angst was caused by the Time War, but the Daleks got overused during the first four series.

*** Spoilers ***

Second half of the angels story was pretty good, I thought. Smith's character definitely shows his moodiness in this one. They really make a point about drawing out his cockiness towards the end of the episode, when he yells at River Song in the flight control deck, and then dismisses her just before beaming her up. I like that they gave her a bit more depth in this storyline, since they couldn't do it during the story with the tenth doctor. Amy's character is definitely a bit more wild and loose than we suspected.

4/5 story.

so I'm thinking she killed the doctor, does everyone else think that? kind of a first time she met him he died (albeit since they've seemingly done away with the whole 10 regenerations thing he should have just regenerated although she did now that if his 2 hearts are destroyed then he can't) and the first time the doctor met her she died.

^ I think that's what they want you to think, but you never know in the world of Who. I was glad to see them bring back River Song. The Silence in the Library eps made you really wonder who this woman was, especially whispering the Doctor's true name to him or something like that. And according to IMDB it looks as though the Doctor will run into her again soon...

really??? It was like that just came out of no where. I didnt feel any buildup to that, no ongoing chemistry to make you think it that would happen, just boom! I wanna make out with ya!

I just wish we could just have some regular 'Doctor saves the day' episodes without some background story developing yet. I wanna get to know the characters and have some great stories before there's some big picture to figure out.

That was my thought as well. Moffatt isn't telling an overall narrative in a subtle way, like Davies did. His plot developments are interesting, but they are undermined by how overt they are.

So far, I've been enjoying it, but my fears about Moffatt appear to be slowly coming true. He just seems to be trying too hard. Every episode doesn't need to have a strange twist or bizzarre props, such as the fortune teller booth ppl that switched their head 180 degrees. They had no underlying importance and served no point but to be strange.

And on that note, I'll probably stop following this thread since ppl want to discuss episodes as they come out in Brittain as opposed to their US air date. I could do that as well, but it doesn't quite feel the same as pulling up BBCA on TV for a 'premiere'.

I've got to say that I was just as skeptical as any other fan, but I really like the new doctor.

I think a large part has to do with the writing, which I think is still exceptional... and I think he's been able to portray a new doctor with the same quirkiness that made david tennant great.

I'm not looking for the same character played by a different actor.. and I think it's refreshing to get something new, but still in the same vein as the previous series.

I've really enjoyed all the episodes so far, and what more can you wish for???

I like the new lead writer or producer or whatever the fuck he is.

I absolutely forgot the man's name and position, but he just took over as the lead whatever at the beginning of this latest season, and he's known for having created some of the most atmospherically creepy Doctor Who episodes in the "new" series's history (and one of my personal favorites, "Blink", which also featured weeping angels).

I am looking forward to this season's full-on dose of creepy Doctor Who... though I may just download them since I don't get BBCA anymore. In that event, I promise not to post spoilers in here ever.

I concur. I was thinking about that the other day when I was watching the last episodes of Series 4. I was like, how many times have they "killed" all the Dalleks since Doctor Who got revived?
