The box set of the theatrical cuts are on sale on blu Ray. Includes the digital copies too.

The extended editions are expected to be released next year when the hobbit hits theaters.

im skeptical that the hobbit will be hitting theaters next year unfortunately. i really hope so but considering they havent done hardly any casting, MGM is still working out money issues, etc. I see them probably not even starting to shoot until this fall.

I see this as nothing but a fleecing of the fans. They should just put the theatrical and extended editions on and give you an option of which one to watch. Not make you buy two overpriced sets and wait another year or two for the fucking set you really want to come out!

shut up you sniveling, whiny bitch. you're probably one of the 2000 people who already gave the blu ray set a 1 star review on amazon for that very reason.

Not very accurate or correct, no. But the voice of negativity is generally the loudest regardless of their numbers.

I know a lot of people that would rather watch the theatrical edition then the extended one.

Would be better if they included a good movie on the disc

i'm not getting crazy. i'm just astounded at how people are blowing it out of proportion. how is it the standard and correct opinion? Nighthawk stated that new line should do precisely what they did with the original trilogy: release both and let you choose which one you want to watch on blu ray. no, the extended editions are not out yet, but they made you wait longer to get those on DVD when those movies originally came out anyway, so why is this even an issue? no one is MAKING anyone buy two overpriced sets. if you want the extended blu ray, do what you did a couple years ago and wait a few more months and pay the extra $$ for it. and how exactly are they overpriced anyway? the standard edition is 60 bucks for 3 movies. most blu-ray movies i've seen cost 30 by themselves. and have they even said it's going to be a year or two until the extended edition is released? "oh no! i have to watch the 4 hour extended version of return of the king along with its superfluous extras on DVD for another few months! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHH!" deal with it.

What I'm also going to be happy about is having the whole extended versions on one disc. Having to change discs interrupts the story and I hate having to eject one disc and put in another.
