Starting us off...

Quote :
"In conclusion, I love america and am thankful to live in the situation I'm in. I also intend to continue moving it in the right direction but I am ashamed of our history and the fact that we got to where we are by stealing everything we have and we maintained our status at the topfor so long by stepping on everyone below us.

Right now we are only #1 in military which is an evil thing so the only thing there is to be proud of is that we are number one in entertainment. Several countries have surpassed us in quality of life, environmental impact and finance."

We stole everything we have? Everything?

Either directly or indirectly stealing.

Also note that just because you probably would have had something even if you didn't steal it doesn't mean you didn't steal it.

For example, we didn't steal our large and efficient food production but it wouldn't be possible without the land which was stolen.

Every piece of land that is currently occupied on this earth was "stolen" from somebody at some point in the past. Eat a dick and get the fuck over it.

Not even close. Israel australia canada and US come to mind but most places are occupied primarily by natives.

Why would natives to an area have any more right to that area than anyone else? Granted, kicking native people out and taking land from them is not right (it would be against any group of people), but the notion that a nation can only be rightfully occupied by natives is like some sort of crazy twist on the already crazy ideas about racial purity...

I surmise that had you been raised in a different environment, you would likely be an enthusiastic white supremacist rather than just an idiot with inconsistent ideals.

I am certain that there is lots of land that has never been stolen, not once, but was bought and paid for every time. Most of such land was probably considered uninhabitable by primitive people, hence no use owning it, much less stealing it. I suspect most of North America falls into this category. I am also certain that much of the land that was occupied by primitive tribes traded hands through violent means at some point in the last ten thousand years.

Thats not the claim. Mixing is great. Non natives can move in and join the natives and ultimately outnumber them but its wrong to kick somebody out and set up shop.

.(i was also thinking about how ironic it was that the great cities of this nation were the 3 that were the least american nyc la and miami)

^we bought stolen land quite often

[Edited on April 18, 2010 at 6:30 PM. Reason : can't sell it if its not yours=stolen indirectly]

That is quite curious. What is unAmerican about LA, Miami, or New York? Do other cities similar in culture exist anywhere else in the world? I have traveled quite a bit, and I'd say not. Or are you racist enough to suggest that because L.A. has Mexicans living in it, the city MUST be identical to Mexico City?

^ Hence my statement that I was talking about two types of land. That which was stolen at least once, which is all the land occupied by primitive peoples, and the land that was probably never stolen in its entire history, which would consist only of land that primitive people would consider uninhabitable.

Much of the cities are a collection of neighborhoods each mocking their own international city/culture.

When I think of American culture I think of big box strip malls, walmarts, big cars on big highways, fast food and chain restaurants and sprawling suburbia.

Those are things created in america and can be found in any american city.

They can also be found in any modern city on the planet. The walmarts may have a different name, and the cars may not be as big, but these are not a product of American culture, they are a product of modern technology combined with innate human desires.

American culture is technology independent. Strip malls and wallmarts don't make technological sense on the isle of manhattan, but it doesn't mean the people are not American.

They most certainly are mocking

koreatown
little italy
chinatown
little havanna
little tokyo
etc etc

Sure they are still american cities but they are significantly less american than 90% of american cities.
Quote :

it does mean they dont live the life of a typical american. american culture is hardly anything but the easiest thing to pinpoint is the "wastful, drive everywhere, live in suburban neighborhood, chain big box, supermarket" culture.

[Edited on April 18, 2010 at 7:00 PM. Reason : driving big cars and wasting energy is american culture. huge corperations is american culture]

Theres diversity in regular american cities but the neighborhoods are integrated and you won't find yourself in an area where had you not known better, you wouldn't be able to tell if you were in seoul or la.

Such is a product of culture. Outside America, architectural choice is often imposed by the city at large. In America for cultural reasons, architecture is allowed to flow and reflect the traditions of its inhabitants. Such used to be unusual, but America's culture of tolerance was special.

No. Chinatown is populated by people that contain a certain expectation for what their property should look like. The architecture and signage is a reflection of the people and history of the area.

To put it another way, no street in chinatown is identical to any other street found in China proper. That is, unless you insist of proclaiming they all look alike to you. Racist.

It is chinese architechture and is a reflection of the history from china. The people are holding on to thier heritage. If it reflected the history of the area it would look like the rest of downtown san francisco.

Question: How is what the rest of downtown san francisco looks like any less of a reflection of other ethnic groups holding on to their heritage?

IOW, what makes the look of downtown san francisco any more "american" than china town?

OK, so here's the thing. Mambagrl is using a very narrow, uncommon definition of "mocking," which includes any form of mimcry or imitation, no matter the intent. By this logic, if you see someone doing something that seems fun and then do it yourself, you are mocking them. I guess it's technically true, which doesn't stop it from being fucking stupid.

Chinatown is full of Chinese shit because Chinese people live there and want to recreate a little piece of home. It doesn't mean they wish they were back in China, it doesn't mean anybody is making fun of Chinese culture. Essentially mambagrl is saying that if you move from Green Bay to Dallas, you are a poser for continuing to enjoy Packers games.
