just as I think every educated person should know calculus.... but they dont. Even simple algebra is hard for some " educated people "
im willing to bet you fall in this category.

algebra and english, ok
calculus and english... not necessary. I have forgotten most of my calculus -- not that I couldn't get it back -- but I simply do not use it in an office setting

i think not being able to spell simple words like "definitely" as an educated person is different than not knowing calculus. even if you are a math person you STILL use the english language everyday - even driving down the road you see signs and billboards.
anyway
definitely REALLY gets me.
restaurant. museum.
do educated people really misspell wednesday? that seems a little cray cray. what about january and february. i see those misspelled.
note: i am not a great speller, either - but i can still do words like this! basic stuff.

I have to agree with this. I've corrected some people on the spelling of the same word over and over before. I don't think it always has to do with less intelligence. Some people just can't memorize spellings or sound out words in a logical manner.5/10/2010 8:59:16 PM |

I met this chick at a bar, and it turned out she had been in the National Spelling Bee multiple times...I got really excited, 'cause I love intelligent chicks
so I got her e-mail (I hate the phone, and can usually tell when I can get away with asking for an e-mail) and e-mailed her
then she went and looked me up on Facebook, and read this note "25 things about me" where one of the things was that I have trouble enjoying alcohol in moderation
and she had just broken up with an alcoholic, so she decided we shouldn't hang out
I'm still kicking myself for that

Their school system failed them somewhere down the line then. Or perhaps they weren't read to as a child. I'm sure we can come up with a couple more excuses while we're at it.
I work with a girl that has HORRIBLE spelling. It grates on my nerves because she IMs me almost every day and I have to face the bad spelling over and over. My favorite incorrect spelling of hers is "holly shit."5/10/2010 9:06:38 PM |

^^^ I know...but we had this stupid-ass teacher in third grade who called recess "Motor Development Time" and used all sorts of other annoying newfangled terms
and she referred to such words as "homophones"
so later on, when I heard that words like "there" and "their" are also sometimes referred to as "homonyms," I naturally adopted this terminology, out of rebellion and spite
must admit, I didn't know that "homonym" was technically incorrect...but apparently it is] 5/10/2010 9:45:53 PM |
