I'd like to get satellite radio.... Bluetooth would also be nice. Good speakers and subwoofer but I'm not going to be cranking it all that loud or entering any competitions.
Where should I go? There's no way I'm going to install myself. 5/11/2010 10:56:24 AM |

No idea on where for you to go, but make sure whoever does the install checks the depths on the door speakers. With the way the monsoon junk is set up, an aftermarket door speaker sits deeper in the door and can catch and break part of the window regulator. 5/11/2010 11:21:45 AM |

Crutchfield is a good place to start for basic/good equipment. However, it's more expensive because they offer all of the install stuff, tons of literature, and free tech support. Shop around on there then purchase somewhere else if you don't want to spend the money.
I get my stuff from Crutchfield and do my own work. I love it - it comes with more than enough install stuff and instructions. The only downside is that their free dash kits are typically garbage (I bought a Scosche dash kit and it looks great).
There are a few car audio places around Raleigh, but they'll try to swindle you. Make sure to check each one out & get quotes for equipment & installs. Don't do Best Buy. The Internet (Amazon mostly) has the cheapest equipment.

^Truth. I get all my head units from Crutchfield. If the door speakers are a standard size and require no adapters, I get them from woofersetc.com or just get the adapters from ebay. 5/11/2010 1:46:08 PM |

I'm definitely not going to install it myself, guys. I got all of that out of my system in high school! 5/11/2010 1:55:42 PM |

^^yeh, woofersetc.com has some nice equipment (and some expensive shit too). ^no one is saying to do it yourself; I just said start with crutchfield & shop around.
I mean, you could just go to a shop and buy their stuff and have them install it. In that case, I'm no help as I haven't used any local shops and shops I've used/talked to in the past were all crooks.
I'd say buy your own equipment or talk to a shop & haggle on equipment prices.

depressing
I thought there would be some reputable installers around... Best Buy is no good? 5/11/2010 2:20:26 PM |

there may be; I just don't know about them because I haven't used them. Best Buy typically sells low end equipment at high prices. And their installers don't do the best of work. It's like comparing a mechanic's shop to walmart for oil/tire changes; sure both can do it, but do you really trust a walmart guy over a mechanic? 5/11/2010 2:26:24 PM |

i know a guy that can do it.. he works at best buy (southpoint?) but knows his stuff. he drives a mk4 jetta (basically the same car) so he is familiar with the platform. his name is rob.
[Edited on May 11, 2010 at 2:27 PM. Reason : not sure if you want to buy your stuff there, but he might do an install on the side] 5/11/2010 2:27:10 PM |

ah, I did talk to these guys once: http://www.radio-active.com/
it appeared that they did good work and there were tons of people in the store when I was there. However, the guy I talked to was a dick and quoted me an outrageous price. Maybe he just didn't care to do what I was asking (it wasn't much) or that's how they operate... I don't know
