I had the same thought when I saw the rainbow in the background. Chicago did hold an event called the "Gay Games" about 2 years ago. Maybe London is hoping to do the same in the future.

Heard on NPR this morning that the mascots were supposed to be symbolic of the growing popularity of webcams....to take away from the view that London spies on everyone with cameras all over the city....

Here is a link that explains them. Last night I read that there is a company that got paid $800,000 to design these and I think they also designed Izzy for the 1996 games.
