That sort of torpedoes the whole "THEY'RE STEALING OUR JOBS" argument, doesn't it? 5/21/2010 11:13:50 PM |

^Anybody for this bill should have seen these effects coming. But they're idiots, and don't think things through.
It does NOT, however, put an end to that argument.
This is a short-term labor supply shock. Labor supply does not move where it is needed instantaneously. The entire economic system of the region relied on their previous source of labor, and if you take that away, times get real tough real fast.
But, that does not harm the argument, if someone on that side is not an idiot. They can simply say, "Getting rid of illegal immigrants is a long-run net positive. But the road to that net positive is not pleasant in the short run."
Expect more business failures in areas where these folks are densely populated. Supermarkets, gas stations, bars, etc. have been built and operated on the assumption that these people are permanently here.
If they don't back down, it's gonna be a few years of pain. Just as with SS, Medicare, and any other issue, politicians are not known for sticking to their guns for the long-term good, when there is short-term pain involved in the cure. But these folks ignored reality and pretended everything would magically fix itself in a few weeks.

In 2007-2008, Arizona started to crack down. Immigrants started to leave. The state economy got worse and/or continued to suck, so now they decided to crack down even more because obviously they didn't do enough the first time. 5/22/2010 11:22:13 AM |

I don't see what's so shocking about the proposals they mentioned. The US has always offered work visas. That's the proper way to do it. We should promote that type of relationship with our neighbors. They have something to offer that is of value to us. We have something to offer which is of value to them. There's nothing wrong with leveraging that relationship to the benefit of both country's citizens.
Just because you work in the US doesn't mean you have the right to become a US citizen. Nor does it mean that we should want a bunch of people here who decided to circumvent the proper means of working in this country.
I wouldn't go take a job at McDonalds in Italy and expect them to make me a citizen for doing it.

Of course not; practically nobody in the first world is bad enough off to put themselves into such a situation. Can you imagine the adversity you'd have to go through before you'd be willing to move somewhere to be exploited as cheap, expendable labor?5/24/2010 6:04:25 PM |

^^ Agreed. I don't see what remotely wrong or immoral about this.
They won't be illegal immigrants any more, not even immigrants. They would come on special temporary permits to work LEGALLY and then go back.
