Got pulled tonight for my tint. It was supposed to be 20%, measured out at 13%. Not bitching about it or anything, just needing some answers.

If I pay the fine do I have to pay the court costs also? The officer said if I take the tint off and take it to the DMV or SHP they will inspect it and write it off, that that to the DA and they'll drop the charge, does that include waiving the court costs?

What's the best/least expensive option here?

Thanks!

WTF! Not like it is some crazy looking thing... Or a jeep with big old tires rolling around corners with the inner front wheel in the air a ft or so.... Silly cops!

stupid question, but isn't 20% still illegal?

^ yes it is. I'm not contesting the validity of this ticket. I had 20% and knew if I got pulled I could get a ticket for it. Just trying to see what is the least expensive way to go about this situation.

Just find someone with the EXACT same car as yours with no tint, switch license plates, have DMV inspect that car, $profit!

Yes. You pay the court costs whether you go to court or not.

Yes. If they'll actually do this for you then this is the $free way out of it. They call it a "Fix It Ticket". Get your razor blade and start scraping. Hope they follow through on their end of the deal. In my experience they will follow through if you do your part, but mine were always for things like headlights or registration that I could just show a receipt for. Never had to go to the DMV, but it should be legit.

Had this happen with the tint on my firebird back in the day. Peeled off all of the tint, took it to the local SHP office and got someone to look at it. Took that to the DA and they dropped it.

Don't use a razorblade to remove tint unless you want to damage the rear defrost. Use the proper tools. I believe there is a specific heat gun intended for it. I had tint stripped on my Q45 and it was definitely not done with a razor blade.

^^ Technically, you're probably right; but only if it has a rear defroster and assuming it works today. I think this is a beater car so I doubt he's too worried about it.

I've got a nice heat gun somewhere around here if you need to borrow it Matt.

I've got a heat gun and most of the rear defroster works

guess I'm going to call the shp and dmv tomorrow to figure out for sure if they'll drop everything if the tint is removed.

Depending on the vehicle the rear tint can be whatever % you want. The 35% only applies to the stripe across the front window and the front driver and passenger windows.

http://www.ncdot.org/dmv/vehicle_services/emissioninspection/tinting.html

Quote :
"The window tinting restrictions apply without exception to the windshield of the vehicle. However, they do not apply to any other window of the following vehicle types:
[...]
A window of a multipurpose vehicle that is behind the driver of the vehicle. A multipurpose vehicle is a passenger vehicle that is designed to carry 10 or fewer passengers and either is constructed on a truck chassis or has special features designed for occasional off-road operation. A minivan and a pickup truck are multipurpose vehicles."

I don't understand why gangster thug types would want tint (not saying Jeepman or anyone else ITT is one)... It seems to me that they would want to limit contact with the police, but tint is like an open door invitation to a cop to pull them over whenever they feel like it. One would hope they aren't tinting because they don't want the cops to recognize them....

For law abiding citizens (now discussing people ITT), why would you go through all that effort/money to apply tint only to have to take it off when you get busted for it? If nothing else, you're gonna get busted for it come inspection time, unless you're getting that 190% shady inspection sticker.

Whenever I see people roll by with obviously illegal tint, I wonder what in the heck they are thinking.

If they don't screw you over, then yes, a fix-it ticket will waive court costs. I would still bring the cash with me in case they didn't, but you should be able to leave there without touching your wallet (except to show your ID).

this isn't true...at least not in my experience...i concur with:

the 2 or 3 "fix-it" tickets i've gotten has resulted in me stopping by, showing the ADA that i did whatever it was i was supposed to do, and they sent me home, no fines or court costs to be paid

*shrug*

^^ Re-read my post. I was obviously referring only to the situation where you pay the ticket through the mail without going to court.

^ since you don't actually mention mailing in your fine, i don't think it's as obvious as you seem to think...but i'm not trying to start an argument, just pointing out that physically going to court is irrelevant in determining whether you have to pay court costs

I'm pretty sure this is a kick in the ass simply because of the time it took him to get that right rear window covered

If you don't know how to get out of a tint ticket you should just stick with not tinting your windows
