My house is prewired 5.1 surround sound.

I've plugged my PS3 and Time Warner Cable box to the receiver through HDMI. I have one HDMI running to the TV. I have the 2 front speakers and subwoofer (rear speakers are not connected yet) plugged in through the aforementioned prewired surround sound and the receiver. I've looked through and followed the TV, receiver and speaker manuals. I've also fucked with many settings on the PS3, cable box, TV and receiver. I know the speakers are hooked up right because I can hear sound when I test the speakers through the receiver.

Can anyone more tech savy than me offer some assistance?

Here's my arrangement:

PS3 and Cable Box -----> Receiver ------->TV through HDMI

also

Speakers-------->audio cable that runs behind the wall--------->wall plate connected to wall----------->receiver via audio cable with banana plugs connected to wall plate

Get an optical cable for the PS3 and use a digital coax (any old RCA cable) for the cable box (orange RCA port).

You really should get a receiver though that does surround sound decoding off the HDMI.

And you wont get any of the HD audio formats with optical/coaxial, only Dolby Digital and DTS.

a cheaper/better option is to run the hdmi's into the tv and 1 optical out to the receiver assuming the tv will do 5.1 through the audio out.

You are saying run the cable box and ps3 HDMI into the TV. then one optical out and into the receiver?

Running the source directly to the tv also makes sure that you miss any signal degradation caused by the receiver. Granted that it's not as big a deal now that everything is digital but it's still a possibility.

Just be careful with that… MOST TVs don’t redirect the surround sound signal out of their digital outputs, it’s just 2 Channel except when you’re using the built in ATSC/QAM tuner.

I think you would have to step up to the 565 or 665 models to get the HDMI passthrough feature. I have the RX-V665 and am currently running a PS3 and soon to be (tonight!) Digital Cable Box into the receiver, with one HDMI out to my TV.

To be honest though, unless you are a pretty big audiophile, and have an acoustically treated room with some very nice speakers, you are not going to see a huge difference between Dolby Digital/DTS and the HD formats.
