Anyone heard anything about this? My screen flickers or totally goes black pretty much all of the time now.

I've seen posts about updating the BIOS, and some with people having faulty LCD cables. Anyone have any ideas or able to fix it for me?

First guess: Faulty LCD cable and/or backlight.

yea, I would take it apart (if it's not under warranty) and reseat what I'm guessing is a 20c ZIF connector.

it is still under the 1 year manufacturer warranty. Should I send it in or try to fix it myself/get someone else to do it?

^under warranty = free? If so it's a no brainer. If you're worried about time without it you can get an old laptop for interwebs use off craigslist for cheaper than paying someone to fix it.
