Name them.

my mom was wicked superstitious when I was growing up and I always felt it was kinda batshit insane, but she's my mom and I love her

she'd always lift her feet from the car floor while driving over railroad tracks, not sure why?

sometimes i realize some of this crap rubbed off on me and I caught myself avoiding being the 13th poster in a thread

what ones do you do or do you know of?

I will play little games with myself like if a certain activity happens then I will do something.

Like if I'm trying to decide if I should do something I will hit shuffle on my iTunes and I'll say if the 5th song that comes up is a song that I know all the words to then I'll do it.

I thought they didn't label the 13th floor in buildings.. most of the time they'd call it 14

but the Progress Energy building, in downtown Raleigh, has a 13th floor

When i played baseball I was superstitious, but not now so much. I am a firm believer in Karma though, if that counts.

I believe the fuck out of karma. Almost to the point where I fear saying some mean shit about someone because it could come round on me even if the bitch pissed me off!

Karma really kicked my ass a few years back and I'm still rubbing the wound.

I'm not superstitious; while I do believe in a karma kind of system, it's just plain simple that shit happens and tends to happy to good people more often then not. So I stopped caring and just roll with it.

haha hey Gus. Thanks y'all.

My left eye has something in it and is itching like crazy. This reminded me of a childhood superstition in my family fostered by my grandmother. When she said "my right eye itches" I had to always say "thank you." I have no idea where that came from, but it was apparently bad luck if I didn't. But you didn't say that if her left eye itched. That was also bad.

I was wondering if anyone else had random ones like that that nobody else has ever heard of.

In looking it up I found a site with this question. WTF. "Did you ever hear the superstion that a woman could tell who her future husband would be by standing at the side of the road, waiting until she counted 10 red cars, then saw a red-haired girl in a purple dress, then a man in a green tie, and THEN the next young man she saw would be her husband?" - Jason Mojica

The Russian girl in my program is full of great ones... One day I was telling her how I saw a lady with NF1 and she was covered with neurofibromas - but when I said she was covered I motioned my hands in an upward/downward way, emphasizing the body thing. She FLIPPED and was like "DON'T DO THAT!!!!!!!!!!!" I was all, "....... do what?!" She said if you use your body as an example or something, it will happen to you

She also said if the clasp on your necklace comes down to the bottom (near the charm), someone is thinking about you.. a bunch of other ones, I just can't remember

I once stepped over my old roommate's textbooks on the floor and she got mad at me. Apparently that's disrespectful and you never step over anything you revere (which ... school books? that seems a bit much).

When I played baseball, all of the starting infielders had to rub dirt on their right pant leg and the center fielder had to eat 1/2 of a snickers bar.

Yeah, I heard it was bad juju to receive a closed knife and return it to the owner open.

i was told that you should never give/receive a knife from a loved one...it should always be sold, if only for a penny

[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 3:35 PM. Reason : but nothing about opening/closing it ]

Well that's just because if your s/o stabs you with the knife when they find out you were cheating on them, if you don't die from the wound you will surely die from the irony.

(assuming that is irony)

[Edited on December 10, 2010 at 3:36 PM. Reason : if the knife is iron is this a pun?]

I have done this for years, and I couldn't give a good explanation as to why. I remember being in the car with my father's parents (whom I was never really close with), and one of them mentioned this practice to me. I guess I was young enough to believe it, and it's stuck ever since.

I also used to hold my breath when passing by a graveyard. Gave that up eventually, but it still crosses my mind when I'm near one. Funny enough, I married a man that grew up across the street from a small graveyard (which he and his brothers used to run around in).

Kiss ones fingers and touch the headliner in the car crossing a state line.

Cross ones fingers whilst passing a graveyard.

If ones right palm itches, one will lose money to someone...if ones left itches, one will find money.

Don't flash high beams as a warning.

Any routine that one believes leads to luck.

Toss spilled salt over ones left shoulder to ward off bad luck.

Finding a horseshoe is good luck.

Opening an umbrella indoors is bad luck.

Walking under a ladder is bad luck.

Finding a four-leafed clover is good luck.

If the flame of a candle flickers and then turns blue, there's a spirit in the room.

If a bird flies through your house, it indicates important news. If it can't get out, the news will be death.

If you feel a chill up your spine, someone is walking on your future grave.

A person born on Halloween will have the gift of communicating with the dead.

A bat in the house is a sign of death.

If a bird flies towards you, bad fortune is imminent.

Crows are viewed as a bad omen, often foretelling death. If they caw, death is very near.

If a person experiences great horror, their hair turns white.

A hat on a bed will bring bad luck.

Eat an apple on Christmas Eve for good health the next year.

Eat black eyed peas and collard greens on New Years Day for wealth in the new year.

These are all superstitions that I observe or have observed at one point in time or another.
