Been seeing the commercials and it looks interesting. http://link.schlage.com/

Basically it's networked home automation and security. Anyone have any experience with it or know more about it?

Base starter kit is $300

If they have a web access panel, could you just use that from a browser?

I looked at it not too long ago. Think it requires a monthly service fee as well -- turned me off completely.

Haha, I saw the thread title and was all like,"why the hell are we talking about a lock company in tech talk"

I think this is the same thing I saw at Lowe's over the weekend. I too didn't like the service plan model. Although, for most people it makes sense. The logistics of trying to connect remotely to your home network can get hairy for the average consumer. I wonder if there is anyway to get it setup to control through wifi w/o the service plan. Then I could pull up with my iPhone and unlock the doors as I'm walking up.

I'm actually working on a home-cooked home automation system for my house that I hope to build some of these same features into. And by working on, I mean I'm still researching to even figure out what existing stuff is worth a shit.

yeah, who the hell is going to pay a monthly fee for the lock on the door to their home?

it's like if you miss a payment, they unlock that shit remotely, and post your address on craigslist.

Isn't a monthly fee pretty par for the course on a home security system?

it's not really a home security system though, more of a home monitoring system

what other similar options are out there?

Locks are technology. Believe it or not, we do not harvest locks from great lock orchards, nor do we fish them from their schools.

Home security system -- If someone tries to break in, security company is notified who in turn notifies the police for you immediately.

Home monitoring system -- In this case, you can see who has locked/unlocked the door and when, and if someone attempts to guess a pass code 4x you receive an email/text alert. You can also create as many different lock codes as you want, and remove them at will. So if you have multiple people coming in and out of a house, you can always see who entered and when. As opposed to a key which anyone could use and you would never know who used it. Also, if you lose a key, you have to change your locks (at least I would). If you forget a pass code, you just create a new one.

This would be great if you had a babysitter, pet sitter, cleaning company, etc that comes and goes -- you would always know when they were there, and if you ever changed to a new person, you just disable the old persons access and create access for the new person. No need to change locks or wonder if they ever made copies of your key.

Also, if you rent your place out, you always know that a previous renter can't just come back at some point in the future and let themselves in, nor do you have to change locks afterward.
