Why do they have such prohibitive rules in place stopping people from running for office here? I thought that our liberal state govenment was all about helping disadvantag people?

Well, you have to believe in the right god. And it's not that you really have to believe in it, you just have to say you do. There's no way everyone in Congress minus that one guy is a theist.

The US Constitution and the Supreme Court both overrule god(s) related requirements that any lower level of government might try to put in place.

It has nothing to do with laws being put in place to keep atheists out of the office. I don't know of any such laws. The problem is that the American people are religious for the most part, and they look down on anyone that doesn't buy into the scam. It's just difficult to get elected. Just like it's difficult to get elected if you're against drug prohibition. It doesn't matter that our drug laws are immoral - the older generation is determined to force their values on the entire country. Until we get those assholes out of office (sup term limits), the rate of progress is going to be very slow.

...and I don't see the Democrats nominating any atheists either. And why would they? All you have to do is lie about being a "born again Christian" once and you're set for life.

Well this thread is about running for office in NC, and I know there are Democratic local office holders that fall in the atheist/agnostic/nonreligious realm. But you are probably right for the higher level statewide offices.

The constitution of the state of NC specifically forbids non-theists from holding office. As mentioned above, the supreme court has rendered such language void, but the de facto standard remains.

It's not even just God, it has to be of the Almighty variety. Here's hoping you don't worship the incorrect one.
